Stolen Valor

Posted on 03/13/2010 6:56:17 AM PST by Sarah-bot

I want to approach this delicately because it is a delicate issue. Throughout our discussions we commonly encounter individuals referring to their military service as a form of reference. I must admit that I have done this my self. The point is that there is no way to know if someone is stealing valor by claiming military service on this forum. I am willing to submit my DD -214 to Jim Robinson or his surrogates. My suggestion is that anyone having prior military service (validated by DD-214 gets a star or some such indicator by their screen name), and those people can reference their military service. I am not saying this because I want to brag, I just resent the idea of people using pretentious military service as a form of reference. If I am out of line on this I apologize and I will accept the rebuke graciously.

Like I said it is delicate and if I am the only one who has a problem with it I will leave well enough alone.

Good idea.

Some folks here donate and do it anonymously, because they want it that way.

I'm a vet and could prove it if I had to, but wouldn't just to post some of my ramblings on a blog, even FR.

Military service is relevant to valor, honor, and sacrifice. This issue come up in discussion repeatedly. I prefer to discuss these issue behind closed doors so to speak, but I have found few willing to oblige. The ones not willing are the one that gave me cause to make this post.

Recognize that military service is irrelevant to most discussions, and having served does not make an unsound opinion sound, or an invalid argument valid—so why mention it?

Precisely.

Uh, this is Freerepublic where I would believe posters stated military experiences & deeds. Unlike the DU sites where everything is suspect & lies.

No that is not exactly the point. I just don’t like people referencing there service as justification. Be a man an stand on your own logic. Much in the same way that LongElegantLegs has done.

My DD-214 comes out every March. My time in the Air Force was very fulfilling. Now I go to Outback Steakhouse and enjoy that Blooming Onion!

I am a Viet Nam Era Veteran. I served on Guam during Operation Bullet Shot and supported the B-52 effort!

I’m sorry, but I do not agree that only military can judge military. In fact, now that I bring this up, I think your entire post is sort of vague and from what I think you are saying, silly.
I hope I’m allowed to say that, not being military and all.

Well, to be fair, it does seem like you’re asking people to leave it to the vets to judge other vets’ patriotism.
That, I think most of us disagree with.
And I can say that, I’m a vet. ;-) Just not a very good one.

Anyway, in a few more posts the whole thing will devolve into a meet’n’greet between the military members of the site, so don’t worry about it too much!

I didn’t say that only military can judge military. Putting aside the silly silliness, I will progress to say that it is decidedly and unequivocally not silly. That aside, military service men and women should not tolerate cowardice accusation from people who have not placed themselves in that situation. I want to be clear and say that valor is not reserved to the military, but it is more common in the military, and the military should be allowed to rate their own in regards to issues of valor.

Your idea is novel and I wouldn’t mind proving my status as most vets wouldn’t. However that being said most vets can smell a stolen valor candidate quickly. For instance when the docs were posted alleging GWB’s flight status etc...those of us who were familiar with those records knew immediately they were fake because of technical issues that only we would know..

It is well known that bull shitte artists that try to fake it in a VFW or Legion are soon discredited because their lies surface quickly....usually because someone was there or has knowledge of the facts far beyond the BS’er.

Good strong conservative logic, well articulated, wins every argument—whether the advocate of such served or did not serve. On the other hand, even a bona fide war hero like McCain is almost without politically redeeming qualities, although he did give us Sarah Palin. And, noting your screen name, if you are a Sarah backer that’s all I need to know. Hell, you coulda won the Medal of Honor but if you’re not backing Sarah....

Well, thanks for your service and keep the faith. And come on 2012.

star or some such indicator by their screen name

Would one receive extra credit for time served in Leavenworth?

Actually, that is what I am saying. I think that vets should be allowed to judge the patriotism of other vets. There is a logical reason for this. I have discussed this in other posts. As we know the military is not a democracy, and it is not a representative republic. The military is a totalitarian system, by necessity. Many patriotic men and women returning from service have spent most of their adult life in a non-republican social environment, but I maintain that they are no less patriotic. This is the reason that I suggest that military should be allowed to judge their own in regard to patriotism.
