A Times-Picayune reporter at the scene says that a body found under the dock near the Natchez river boat appears to be that of missing Houston businessman Douglas Schantz.
The New Orleans Police Department reported earlier that the search for Douglas Schantz, the missing oil executive from Houston, had shifted to the Mississippi River.
Chief Warren Riley reported at a press conference this morning that Schantz was tracked after he left Razoos Bar and Patio about 2:06 a.m. by various cameras in the French Quarter. He walked down Bourbon Street to Toulouse Street and then to the Natchez river boat. A camera showed him walking along a 2-3 foot-wide gang plank near the boat about 2:40 a.m. when he suddenly disappeared from view. A review of the subsequent 4 hours of tape do not show him again.
The police believe he fell into the river. "We know he had been drinking and appeared disoriented," Riley said.
A team consisting of 30 detectives, 8th District police officers, FBI agents and Houston-based private investigators visited nearly every private business in the French Quarter during their investigation. The harbor police and Coast Guard joined the police in searching the river.

While he may not win a Darwin Award, he without question deserves a Darwin Award Nomination.
“A camera showed him walking along a 2-3 foot-wide gang plank near the boat “
so the environmentalists made him walk the plank?
Someone’s family member has died and this thread is full of snarky comments.
Guess no one here ever drank too much and found themselves in a bad situation.
someone’s family member died and thiss thread is full of....
Yep- more times than not the “cute” “funny” “Wow ain’t I the smart one to think of this” or “to get it posted first” is what is posted on FR - I remember when it was better.
Unfortunately...death threads are no different.
These are tough times but we don’t have to add to another family’s sorrow.
I feel sorry for his family. They were on tv last night hurting, looking for their father. Saying money was no object.
I hate to hear he died but I’m glad they found his body.
It’s sad.
Police confirm the body pulled from the Mississippi River Tuesday is missing Houston oil executive Douglas Schantz. Bob Young of the New Orleans police department says police believe Douglas Schantz drowned accidentally. The 54-year-old president of Houston-based Sequent Energy Management had been missing since early Friday...... Schantz had all of his credit cards and jewelry and foul play is not suspected.
I saw his son’s interview on Fox News this morning and he looked terrified talking about his father missing.
What a sad day for his family.
Very sad.
May he rest in peace.
I had suspected foul play, but I guess the tapes would have shown if another person was stalking him.
I didn’t see it, but I heard the pain in his voice. It is so heartbreaking.
At least now they know, but that is small comfort.
Prayers for all his loved ones.
re: without question deserves a Darwin Award Nomination
Perhaps there should be an honorable mention award. For those who don’t really qualify for some reason but certainly went beyond the call when it came to doing something foolish.
I could have taken that award several times in my life!
If you are under 25 and male, you are exempt from winning a Darwin Award.
This is so sad and such a waste. I wish that he had not left the bar alone. He must have been very inebriated. The news said that the cameras set up at the Natchez and Aquarium of the Americas showed Mr.Schantz climbing a fence and then trying to navigate the gang plank along the boat before he disappeared from sight. He was alone and was not followed. I feel so bad for his family. God bless them.
I have walked by that very spot dozens of times, drunk and somehow avoided walking the plank.
Yes, it is a tragic event and it was caused by his own drunken stupidity. However, I’m a bit surprised that when one guy goes missing in NOLA it makes national news.
RIP.
Thanks H.P....
