If the accelerator has gone nuts, putting it in neutral is the last thing you want to do, I would think.

So you blow up your engine versus having a run away car?

I haven’t been able to figure out why people haven’t done this .... or turned it off so I looked it up and found an article saying to turn the ignition to ACC so you still have power steering and brakes.

I would think it would be better to blow your engine than to crash - possibly crashing into others. The engines in those probably just sound like a mosquito anyway when they are over-revving.

For about 30 hair-raising miles beginning near Lake Jennings Park Road near Flinn Springs, Sikes tried frantically to slow down the 2008 hybrid. At one point the speedometer hit 94 mph, said Sikes, who called 911. A CHP officer was dispatched and while driving alongside, coached Sikes over a loudspeaker on how to get control of the car, a process that involved the brakes, the emergency brake and, when the speed came down some, turning off the ignition

Wrong. Buying an engine is cheaper than a major car crash.

Wouldn't it just blow up the engine?
