“Local census spokescritter said last week they were having trouble recruiting people at $14/hour.”
He isn’t joking. I’m working at the local Census office now. We got plenty of calls in the Recruiting session, but very few that really WANTED the job. They just wanted something to write on their unemployment form to say they were looking. The bad part is that the Enumerator jobs ( the door to door people) generally aren’t full-time, and are of very limited duration. Everyone in the office is on 8-10 week terms and have to be reappointed after that, even the managers. The office jobs pay less than the field ones, but have (more or less) stable hours and usually full-time.
It’s REALLY busy in the office too. It’s organized, but has its bad moments, too.
I guess Census jobs really are keeping the unemployment rate down.
