I'll be interested to see the tax charges. They will be far more serious if they are brought than the campaign finance matters. Its pretty hard to move that much money around in secret without creating a lot of tax liabilities, violating information return requirements and reporting rules. Gross income includes all money from whatever source unless excluded by a code section. A gift is only a gift if made with detached and disinterested generosity. So, when Edwards gives a bunch of money to his now deceased lawyer pal, was that income? Where's the gift? It was intended for Riell so it can have been a gift to the lawyer pal. Then when the lawyer pal gives the money to Riell, is that a gift? Where's the gift tax return? Is there really detached and disinterested generosity?
If they wanted to, there could be a lot of charges.

If Edwards was acting in concert with his lawyer to move money around then I believe that would constitute RICO charges...
