An animal protection group is urging French authorities to build special crossings to save millions of frogs and toads from being squashed on the country's roads.
"For frogs, toads and newts, the most visible cause of death is undoubtedly road traffic: the animals try to reach the damp areas they need to reproduce and are flattened by the million," the Association for the Protection of Wild Animals said on its website.

I no animal rights activists - just love dogs and wildlife in the wild.
We have an annual slaughter in Seattle on Highyay 520 that has a Jersery Barrier between East bound and West bound lanes. The road bisects two forested areas.
The poor little racoons trying to get to the other side to find a mate in the spring are routinely slaughtered by the traffic when they are trapped by the Jersey Barrier. I have no idea of the count but it seems some days its is as high as 10-15 - other days less. But each day I make that commute I see 5+. All this in a 2 to 3 mile stretch of highway.
I’m getting soft in my old age, but it’s not hard to feel a pang of remorse for the senselessness and futility of their deaths.
...and then have terrible gas.
