Captive orca industry is an atrocity

Tillikum was sent to Florida from Victoria, has been driven crazy and can't take it anymore.

Of course there is a human tragedy in this, and I'm sorry for the family.

But Tillikum was stolen from his family, the L-25s from Iceland, at a young age, has grown into a strong, angry, bored, lonely adult, has no lasting friendships, doesn't speak the same language as anybody he's been forced to live with and is confined to a kiddie-pool sized tank in comparison to the whole of the Icelandic coast that is his family's home.

He is used, and I mean used, in the captive breeding program at Orlando. This does not involve temporary but possibly fun liaisons with female orcas. It involves handlers and electrodes and sedation and collection tubes. Is this a life you'd want, or wish on anyone?

And the babies produced -- is it OK to raise intelligent mammals in water-filled cages? Is it OK because "it's all they've known"? Would it be OK to raise a human baby in a cage if you made sure that was all he or she was going to know?

The entire captive orca industry is an atrocity and must be shut down.

***To equate whale babies with human babies is ...not logical.***

So don’t do it. No-one has made that connection.

The discussion concerns taking large, rare creatures and subjecting them to inhumane, unnatural conditions for profit and entertainment.

Not a vegetarian, or PETA person, so food and fur aside, to torment any of God’s creatures for entertainment is wrong.

Sigh!! Slowly now, so that even the animal-rights extremists can understand; Killer whales (orcas) are animals. They are not human beings and should not be equated as such. This business of assigining human thought and feelings to an animal is absolute nonsense. They think as animals, not people. is there room for improvement? of course!! But please, let’s stop this thinking of animals as funny-shaped people.

I agree. I’m not a frothing at the mouth animal rights activist but this is inhumane.

Is it really any better for a cow who is confined in a lot until it is slaughtered and eaten? Why isn’t that considered abuse?

I would bet the entertainment division of SeaWorld is heavily subsidizing the scientific/research side of the business. Better than them using our tax dollars. And these people who work with these animals L O V E their jobs and love these animals probably more than the animal-rights activists do. The trainers and scientists at SeaWorld didn’t learn their profession from brochures and emotional videos at PETA Inc.

Absolutely animals in captivity need to be treated humanely and with great care and respect. But animals, as intelligent as some may be, have never found a cure for disease, written a thesis at a university, formed a government, or posted a video on YouTube. When animals figure out a way to do that we can assign them human rights and give them a seat at the conference table.

What if the animal, which feeds largely on seals, tries to snag the seal-sized snack standing next to the water's edge...

Why are we surprised that a predatory animal acted like a predator? Am I missing something to the story?

No one wants to have a horrible death happen such as this, but is this rocket science?

Yup, they are. And they don’t belong in zoos. No animal does, it’s unnatural.

Well now, we are animals. I mean we’re mammals , animals with self-regulating body temperatures, hair and milk-producing mammae in the female. We’re primates actually. We’re at the top of a species that includes, chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and Gibbon monkeys(monkeys with tails).

There are a number of animal species that only exist in zoos. I take it you wish to exterminate them?

In Africa, the large animals have huge swaths of land which to roam. The large whales need the same.

Zoos serve a purpose when none else remain. But the ideal is a large amount of land/ocean where they can roam. Anything less is cruel IMO.

Can I ask why you made such an idiotic supposition? Did I say anything about ‘’exterminating animals? I merely said I’m not in favor of zoos. I’m generally a genial sort but I’ve gotten a little peeved at people like you who make such statements as you just did.

The closing of zoos = the extermination of species that only live in zoos. QED.
