Something we all knew . . .
Good thread bump.
Would you go up against this?
You are *severly* underestimating a citizenry that is universally armed and highly proficient with small arms.
The amount of manpower and firepower it takes to reduce such a defending force is unbelievable.
The Nazi’s weren’t afraid of mountains. They merrily fought in all kinds of places that were extremely poor tank country. Norway, the mountains of the balkans, the Ardeinnes, Italy, etc. The Nazi flag was planted at 18,000 ft. in the Caucasus mountains.
But somehow, they never *quite* found the time to attack the Swiss, right next door.
Nazis could fight bad weather and terrain, and often did,,, they didn’t dare go up against Swiss Rifles. With a similar layout, the Finns gave a horrifying account of theirselves.
A citizen Militia, widely armed with accurate rifles, is probably the best national defense of all. It’s main weakness is that it’s almost useless in projecting power abroad. (Some see that as a positive too)
That, and 500 years of people living in democracy, and chocolate, and secret bank accounts.

I’m not underestimating anything.
My experience with heavy weapons (armor, arty, etc.) isn’t insignificant.
I never said the Nazis were unafraid of mountains, there just wasn’t the opportunity to deploy tanks, if they’d wanted to.
Rifles against rifles evens things out significantly.
Admittedly, it’s usually a 3:1 advantage for the defendor.
Put a tank into the mix and a squad or even a platoon with rifles is screwed. This has been mitigated by RPGs and Javelin-like weapons, but the advantage is still there.
Again, my argument stands that if you’re able to add HEAVY WEAPONS into the mix, it changes things up dramatically.
The real question is, what would the Nazis have gained by an invasion?
Correct. A militia defense is a poor second to the ability to project power. Militia's are tough on defense, but no threat outside their native territory. The last time the US relied exclusively on a militia was the War of 1812. The Brits burned Washington DC. Our invasion of Canada went nowhere. Yeah, we ultimately won, but only because the Brits lost interest when Napoleon got rolling again. Up to that point the Royal Navy could take the Red Coats anywhere they wanted to go and there was very little we could do about it.
Even higher than that in rough terrain, all things being equal (which they seldom are...)
Nothing. Italy was an ally, and Austria was an annexed part of Germany. There was no reason to go charging into Switzerland.
There were also advantages to using the offices neutral nations like Switzerland & Sweden. An invasion would have wrecked those arrangements.
Desert, I particularly liked the gentlemens reference to within a short time Suisse could field an entire army. Let’s not even talk about if a bunch of them went underground!

Exactly.
Switzerland may have been on the list, but it was waaaaaay down there.
If the Nazis had progressed as far as that, Switzerland would have fallen.
