Feb. 25, 2010 "Growing Pains'" Andrew Koenig Found Dead Father Walter Koenig Holds Emotional Press Conference, Says Son Took His Own Life (CBS/ AP) Vancouver police said Thursday evening that missing "Growing Pains" actor Andrew Koenig's body was discovered.

Koenig's father, of Walter Koenig, who played Chekov in the original "Star Trek" said during a press conference that his son took his own life.

Koenig, 41, was visiting friends in Vancouver when he went missing more than a week ago.

The Venice, California, native had a recurring role on the 1980s sitcom as Boner, a pal of star Kirk Cameron's character, Mike.

"What a great guy and a good human being," his father said. "He was obviously in a lot of pain."

Koenig implored others who were depressed to seek help.

"If you learn anything from this there are people out there who really care, you may not think so, and it may ultimately not be enough, but there are people who really care," Koenig said. "Before you make that final decision, check it out again and talk to somebody."

Kirk Cameron ‘praying’ for Andrew Koenig’s safe return

Good ol' USA Today--just had to put praying in quotation marks.

My condolences for your loss.

I had a co-worker who committed suicide, and we had no idea it was coming. The only comfort was that we got to tell his parents some stories about how much we liked him and how appreciated he was.

And condolences to Walter and his family.

This is so sad. I’ve had a family member commit suicide (mental illness) and a close friend’s son hung himself (drugs may have been involved). It’s bad no matter what the reason. All who cared for the person just wish they could have done something to prevent it. After they have taken this action, all one can do is pray for their souls.

He did a good job playing the goofy Boner. Wasn’t his dad’s name Sylvester Stabone? Lol.

YES! I remember that.

Boner: (shrugging) "Who knew?"

The last time Boner was on the show, if I remember correctly, he joined the Marines and left to go to basic training.

His eyes betray his smile in the larger picture. There is a glimpse of something, but I cannot put a word to it.

Prayers for his family. That’s horrible.

Charles Boyer, Gregory Peck, Ray Milland, Paul Newman, Art Linkletter, Robert Taylor, Mary Tyler Moore, Jim Arness, and Marlon Brando all lost children to suicide. Being the child of a famous actor can be very difficult.

I was going to combine remarks to save time & space. Changed my mind & forgot to remove your name & now wasting more bandwidth explaining it.

I’m more than old enough to know who this is, but I don’t — regardless, very sad story.

I hope you never have to deal with a suicide of a loved one. My brother suffered from depression and killed himself three years ago. It's devastating for those left they leave behind.
