SAN DIEGO -- Mayor Jerry Sanders made a personal pitch Sunday to software mogul Larry Ellison to hold the 34th America's Cup in San Diego.
The two men met privately before a public ceremony aboard the USS Midway museum on San Diego Bay featuring the oldest trophy in international sports.

There was a victory party here in San Diego for BMW/Oracle Racing. It was held on the USS Midway. I managed to shake hands with Russell Coutts, Jimmy Spithill, and Larry Ellison, and I thanked each one for their efforts. I also managed to get a short video of Larry Ellison discussing where the next America's Cup might be held. YouTube video here.
This is as close as these two dudes would let me get to the Cup.
America’s Cup Ping.
Right on! Home of Dennis Conner’s Yacht Club and his Cup syndicate.
I wish I could find the SI cover with Conner and Reagan. Classic.
Once the ceremony was over, they took the cup to the replica yacht America and sailed it over to the San Diego Yacht club at sunset.
I know there are many retired Cup boats from various past syndicate fleets in the Caribbean available for daylong charter. Does San Diego have them available, too?
I think the Dennis Conner catamaran might still be around. We actually have grey skies and rain out here.

A shot of the whole team. Yeah, the mayor had to get in on it too (he's the fat one).
with a fighter jet as back-up.......ain't nobody stealing that trophy! LOL!
Those two guys had those little FBI like things in their ears and were serious as all get out.
8th guy from the left with the grey hair looks like my friend Chris who I told you about previously......
On a Caribbean cruise about 10 years ago, the missus and I went for a short race on board an old Canadian AC yacht ("True North") and we beat "Stars and Stripes". Loads of fun, but I actually injured my knee while working on of the winches.
Sounds like a genuine blast. It would be a dream to sail one. Those grinder winches are hardcore.
I’ve only sailed small one-designs on inland lakes in the Midwest.
Well, the tour operator was actually running the show. I was just low-level crew along mostly for a fun morning of sailing in San Marteen. :)
That’s the cover! Awesome.
Those were good times. Thanks for the post.
Serious loads in the sheets! but tons of fun to sail...
One of my dream jobs would have been to perform sea trials for Hunter, Alden, Hinckley, or Catalina.
This whole thing is a sad, sad joke.
As an old Yachtie who used to get really fired up about the America’s Cup it is sad to see what it has degenerated to.
They should call it the “Mercenary’s Cup” now, almost the entire crew of this year’s winner were Kiwis, Aussies & Eurpoeans. Good for them but it has nothing to do with the US.
When they go back to national teams, home country built boats and gear, then I will get excited. Or at least national teams and class built identical boats.
