Mother's pit bull kills Fishtown woman
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 02/21/2009 | Craig R. McCoy

In what is believed to be the first fatal dog attack in Philadelphia in more than a quarter-century, a pit bull sank her teeth into the neck of a 38-year-old Fishtown woman and killed her yesterday.

The victim, Christine Staab, had been arguing with her mother in their Oxford Street rowhouse and fell backward. At that point, the dog leaped on Staab, said her mother, Barbara Erb

Why was it a mistake?
Did you drown the mother?

[Note to self: don’t fall backwards in the vicinity of a pit bull during a ferocious argument with mother...]

I can’t believe that the older woman seemed more concerned about her killer mutts than her own DAUGHTER, even acknowledging that she used drugs!

I don’t kill cats or dogs - I rescue them. Mom-cat was a pregnant rescue. The cocker spaniel was a rescue as well. Mom-cat died at 12-years, the cocker spaniel passed away at 17-years, and the kitten, born in my bedroom, lived 15-1/2 years until he passed away quietly in my home. All were well loved pets.

The reason I said she made a mistake; she attacked the sleeping dog even though he wasn’t harming her kitten. The baby was just squealing fearfully as I tried to pry him off my levis! Perhaps it was because Mom-cat was blind in one eye and had only known the dog a few days that contributed to her anxiety and the mistaken attack. PS - it wasn’t a really serious attack - the dog only had a small bite on one ear.

Just yesterday my DIL accidently stepped on her cat’s tail, the cat squalled she tried to move but between her maneuvers and those of the cat, she ended up on her tail again with the cat really making a ruckus. The dog automatically thought that he had to step in to defend my DIL and attacked the cat. LOL, the dog is a chihuahua so there was no bloodshed and it was hilarious while it lasted.

I had a boxer and a chihuahua, the chihuahua used to chase my grandchildren and nip at their heels, the boxer tried to protect the children and would attack the chihuahua, we had to keep them apart when there were children around.

I don’t think I’d ever want a pit bull just because in being who they are they can be very dangerous and yet I’ve known pit bulls who are very placid and sweet.

"This is the third this week."

Yes--the woman, a five-year-old and a three-year-old (last night, which story and thread was deleted).

Some Oxford St history.
I lived around the corner at Belgrade & Columbia.
My ancestors were married in the church down the corner on Girard.
This is a great old neighborhod with great early history.

The woman was on drugs and had five dogs, and the mother felt it necessary to defend her dogs! That is a great example of responsible dog ownership, right.

What’s worse, the news story quotes Dogsbite.org as a source, which is ridiculous. They purposely skew numbers (pit bulls are nowhere near only 5% of the dog population first of all) and the woman who runs that site was known by “bitbypit” a full year before she was supposedly attacked. She has also admitted to being mentally unstable in a way that directly affects her ability to behave rationally, making her one of the worst resources to use.

Dog bite fatalities are extremely rare, but because we now have the technology to view news from everywhere, the media reports make it seem like 30 people a year out of 300 million is somehow an epidemic. I would love to see less fatalities, less attacks. But the fact of the matter is that until people get their heads out of their butts and learn to do their own research, or at least admit that their emotional, ignorant beliefs are simply wrong, the wrong laws will continue to be passed, and morons will continue to treat their dogs like people, making change impossible.

No problem. Your article was different than the original.
The only danger in posting multiple reports is that FRiends
such as 'fish tank' will think they are separate attacks.
If the search function doesn't turn up a particular 'pit bull' attack
it won't hurt to check here before posting. :)

Same here. There is a Staffordshire terrier a few doors down, and it is the sweetest dog I have ever met.

I would expect most any dog to defend an owner, and to defend territory. My concern is the disproportionate stats regarding pit bulls and, to a lesser extent, rotties, attacking.

three-year-old (last night, which story and thread was deleted).

That was not a 'pit bull'.

And actually it's been 4 deaths altogether. You havent seen the fourth on FR.
Apparently if it's not caused by a 'pit bull' the attack posters don't find it newsworthy.

The reason why I have a Pit bull that loves children is to make up for my... how do you say... err... ahh... physical short-comings.

It can't be what I'm thinking 'cause obviously you're a big dick.

"That was not a 'pit bull'."

ABC News photo of the dog. Other news reports on the crime comfirmed that it was a pit bull. We're all well aware of the daily demonstrated lack of credibility of pit bull advocates.

This weekend, a baby was also killed by a husky, but I am sure that’s not as important now, is it? The same irresponsibility caused the death, just like all the others, but hey, let’s just ban pit bulls so we can live in a false-reality and ignore all the other deaths because they must be purely accidental and totally unpreventable.

Oops. That was a photo of the pit bull that killed a 3-year-old yesterday. ...will post evidence on the pit bull that killed the woman.

I loathe this tap-dancing in FReeperland when it comes to defending Pit Bulls.

Only a vicious animal would attack to kill a prey when it was down. A good dog would have made sure the perp stayed down without killing it.

Pit Bulls are vicious animals.

KILL THEM. KILL THEM ALL.

Well said. Doxies were bred to do that, and it shows in the statistics regarding the breed. They are very tough amazing little dogs. But because they are smaller and do not have particularly powerful jaws, we do not see a lot of posts about maimings and killings from doxies (imagine that).

Dog owners seem to have no trouble acknowledging that a westie will dig up a back yard going after moles, or that a border collie will herd children. Try to take a scent hound on a walk without having it want to stop for a sniff every two feet. Why is it so hard for some people to understand that there are pit bulls that will act out based on what they were bred to to?
