Does submergence in extremely cold water preserve OR destroy such evidence for forensic examiners?

I guess when you think of it the number of missing and murdered persons each year, it becomes astronomical. But when you are a scientist as the above are, a genius to boot in their fields of endeavor, then it becomes extra newsworthy, extra suspicious. Drowning historically of those in the scientific community seems quite prevalent.
