Awwwwww . . . . she's clearly enjoying the snow!

Here's why I call my Ruby "Marley Cubed":

The most dangerous place in the world is between Ruby and a downed mallard duck.

You would expect my Katy Dog to be a sweetheart, looking at her face.

But if you show her a duck . . . it's Katy Bar the Door (which is her registered name).

She is a pretty girl.

She knows her role in life, especially when she is at work.

I think the yellow Labs really are the prettiest - it's the black "mascara" around their eyes. Katy has extremely dark skin - even her tummy is black - and that along with the oriental slant of her eyes (we're seeing that a lot now in the yellow hunt test dogs, especially the ones out of Charlie Jurney's kennels in NC) makes her look rather exotic and glamorous.

I am thinking of breeding her to one of Charlie's dogs that belongs to a friend of mine -- assuming her hips and his pass muster (she's already had her CERF testing for her eyes and she's clear, but her hips can't be checked til she's 2 and she's not even 1 yet). She's a carrier of EIC, and this male dog hasn't been tested yet, but if he's clear and not a carrier then we can breed them. He is a splendid young dog, a nice pale yellow, not too large but beautifully muscled and put together, FAST and very keen on birds. I do hope they'll be able to make a match of it.

Thank you! I love them dearly.

Here they all are together in their Christmas picture:

The Choc on the far left is my 10 year old, Shelley. She's titled in Agility, Hunting Retriever, and is going back to school on Monday to get an Obedience title, just so she'll have bragging rights.

Note her modest expression.

By the way, how the heck much snow did you get??

It looks like an awful lot. Your girl is practically buried.

They got nearly a foot of snow near Charleston SC and some friends of mine were running in a hunt test down there. One guy we know has a little Boykin Spaniel, and you couldn't even see him over the snow!

The photo was taken after the second storm of the week.

We got 18 inches in the first storm and 15 inches in the second one.

your dogs all look like sweethearts, my lab is old and on the lazy side. Read the book on Marley and laughed myself silly...Now that was a dog that took lots of love and PATIENCE.

Hey, it took her almost 10 years to get all that stuff!

Actually, that pic is pretty old and she has some more ribbons and titles now. Note the absence of white hairs ("hairs of wisdom") on her muzzle. She's got her Agility Dog and Advanced Jumpers titles in USDAA, her Agility Excellent and Agility Excellent (Jumpers) in AKC, her CGC from AKC, her Working Certificate from the Labrador Retriever Club, Junior Hunter in AKC, and Started Hunting Retriever in HRC. She lacks one pass in HRC to get her Hunting Retriever title, and at that point we'll probably retire her from retrieving. It's a lot to ask a 45-pound 10-year-old dog to haul 4 or 5 large mallards a hundred yards or so!

Since she was an "only dog" for 8 years, she's very interactive with her humans and has a vocabulary of about 250 words. Ruby the Black Lab is just not as bright a bulb as Shelley (except when it comes to ducks - that's really all she cares about), we don't know about Katy yet but she seems pretty smart.

Yikes! You’re lucky you didn’t have to climb out the windows of your house! (That happened to some friends of mine in Nebraska - they opened a second story window and dropped out onto the snow so that they could get the door shoveled clear.)

Poor Marley! That book makes me so angry -- the breeder TOLD them that dog would be a handful, and they saw the sire, who was obviously a high-octane dog. Yet they take that poor puppy to a small suburban house as a first dog, and expect him to behave like a little lap dog with the blood of all those field champions raging in his veins . . .

If a suburban family had taken my Ruby as a first dog, she would have hit the pound within months if not weeks. She has to get her hard work in or she is simply unbearable.

It was worse when she was a puppy. She had all this tremendous store of energy, muscles of steel and a head of pure granite, and no idea what she was meant to do in life.

Three obedience courses, an intensive daily training course and force-fetching with a professional trainer for a month, daily workouts of 2 miles, retriever work 2-3 times a week, and three years later, she's a nice little dog with a good work ethic.

I appreciate your kindness to the poor dog and I’m sure he does the same; however, for your sake and the sake of any children or pets you have, please remember that a neglected dog, especially one who’s intact and has a female in heat, can be dangerous! Especially behind a three foot fence.
I’m sorry your neighbors are such tools, maybe if they notice that you’ve taken an interest in their dogs, they’ll do the same.
They’re a great breed, and I know several and love them, but if the dogs get into the habit of wandering please don’t hesitate to call animal control.

If they get what they want, then they've succeeded, right?

Sounds like your dogs have Highly Effective Habits of Highly Effective Canines.
