this is really cool, and illustrates some great points about active target tracking. A photo-diode is used to determine if the laser is targeted at a mosquito, the range of the mosquito, and even guess the sex of the mosquito based on the flapping frequency of the wings.
I've seen a similar technique used for a gestural interface to track finger segments (using an IR lasers, thus effectively invisible). Also I recall 70's era anti-missile missiles with specially shaped detector arrays (wedges and concentric arcs) to perform target aspect recognition.
