He did purchase two tickets for the original flight, but went standby for an earlier flight. The standby flight was the one he got the boot on, because the plane was already almost max takeoff weight.

Sitting in a seat next to sweaty rolling fat oozing under the arm rest
and rubbing your leg is no way to fly. It happened to me and I had to
endure it for five freekin hours.
