This forum could include posts about Free Republic itself.
For instance, I'd like to see a "block" for the current hottest top 20 posts. This would measure hits over time, weighing the last hour as much more important than hits more than 12 hours ago. This would help avoid duplicate posts & help organize comments.
I'd post questions about "us" there as well, such as: is the main thing we have in common a love for the literal US Constitution?

As long as they're at it; why not a section for video links. And even without a video section, a requirement that a link to a video (you tube, live leak, weasel zippers) have SOME DESCRIPTION of the video in it, instead of "Hey, you gotta see this".
Off soapbox....

One thing that would be helpful to noobs (well, I would find it helpful) is to have a link to the list of news sources with copyright restrictions (i.e. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1111944/posts ) directly on the posting page. Whenever I am posting from a new source I lose a minute or two trying to find it.

The best way to increase participation is to jump right in and follow these two rules:
1. Don’t make it/take it personal
2. Don’t be an a$$
Simple as that. As a noob, prepare to piled on because, well, that’s how we do it ‘round these parts...

Welcome to FRee Republic! I remember having some difficulty navigating my first few months, but soon enough you’ll be able to get what you want. The current latest posts are on the main “Comments” page of “Everything,” and if you look, you can see how many posts to the thread there are. That will give you some idea of the “hot topics.”
Let me encourage you to just read for a few months. I am STILL learning new things about FR after 10+ years, it’s a very user friendly site.
Thanks for being a newbie, or “N00b” or any of the other things you’ll be called. Most N00bs get a bit of hazing, but hang in there, you will soon get a reputation from what you post, and you will find yourself in the middle of a bunch of conservatives! (Like a herd of cats, we DO tend to be difficult at times...)
Again, Welcome! ;-D

Jump right in, the beatdown only hurts for a little while.

Hey, I lurked for 2 years and still got crosswise with A+Bert shortly after signing up. (Old timers will appreciate the gravity of that!)

Another thing to note: Use the actual headline of the article. That way others can search and see if the story has already been posted.
Because, lord knows, every time a story about the Sissy Weakling in the Oval is produced, you’ll always be tempted to rewrite the headline to “Obama sticks it to us again”, “Obama bows to the Burger King” or some such.

My recommendation would be to post the following threads:
"What should I do to get more hits for my blog?"
and
"How come Free Republic doesn't have avatars?"
For the best response you should post them in breaking news.
