Help with Software Installation Problem
My Brain ^ | today | kimmie7

Hi Freepers!

Sorry to post, but I've been sick a long time and my brain is so foggy.

While sick, I made an amateur's mistake on eBay. I bought some language software recommended for Win 95 or 96. I can't get it to install on my laptop running XP. There is plenty of space available. I think there are 8 MB required, I have several hundred gig available.

I keep getting the error, "Setup is unable to run an intermediate file needed to proceed with the installation. Error 104."

I'd really like to be able to use this software...could anyone give me a hand?

Its probably missing necessary system files. Do a search on the software and the error. You might be able to find the missing files.

The install discs are complete and like new. I’ve googled the software and the error and nothing much comes up.

Contact the maker of the software, they may have a file that you can use that will make your XP compatible with their software.

Not everything that was made for 95/98 will run on XP. You might try the software company. If nothing else they might sell a cheap upgrade.

I suppose you could try installing win98 to a virtual computer using virtualbox or some similar software.

I thought that was going to work, but it didn’t. Thanks, though!

Try to install in safe mode...F8 during startup.

Virtualbox is a program that simulates a computer. You install the program in xp. And then you start the program and install an operating system and the program you want to this virtual computer.
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Documentation

You can easily find old windows versions online if you don’t already have one. Win98 is supposed to work on it. I don’t know about 95, but there should be a good chance of the program working on 98.

It’s not as hard as it may seem.

If the program works in DOS it may be even easier to use DosBox.

BTW, have you searched online for other people’s experiences in running the program in XP?

This is actually what made it work, though not in the way you suggested. It was strange, I clicked “restart” and as it exited out of programs, it brought up the install screen, installed the program and continued the restart. Program is working perfectly!! THANKS TO EVERYONE!!

Looks to be a great investment too, the program is “Tell Me More” German. I’m lovin’ it already! Oh, and so is the homeschooler for whom I bought it. LOL

Ausgezeichnet! Hoffentlich Sie werden viel Deutsch lernen!

In the meantime read about Mark Twain's experience with German.
