“Friendly fire” by the immune system is a major factor in the pathology of many diseases. The concept is called “Immunotoxicity”. Modulating the natural responses of the body-DNA-mind system via signaling molecules is usually the way to go towards finding solutions to these problems. My .02$.

I am wondering about the application of this research to the whole gamut of auto-immune diseases.

Complement system ping! IMHO, this might be a big deal in stopping reperfusion injuries in particular and immunology in general.

Human astrovirus coat protein binds C1q and MBL and inhibits the classical and lectin pathways of complement activation

Why would we evolve with such a destructive pattern?

Because when you have a fever it is better to cook your brain and survive than to limit the immune response and keep your IQ at the expense of your life.

A woman may well mate with a dumb guy with a fever scared brain, but nobody can reproduce with the dead guy with the perfect brain.

Your question is somewhat akin to asking...

“Why do civilians die in war?”

But much like with targeted weapons, better biological tools can make it a more “surgical” strike. That is most likely the eventual aim of this sort of research.

I hate it when my immune system has a deadly response. It just kills me.

The complement cascade is a major factor in the allergic immune response, particularly anaphylactic shock.

I wonder what this for portend for allergy sufferers.....
