Ouija board a controversial toy for tots

Toys R UsToys R Us is selling Ouija boards, promoting them as acceptable for children as young as eight years old.

The pink edition of the Ouija board is listed for girls eight-years-old and up while the regular version is designated for all children eight and up. Stephen Phelan, communications manager of Human Life International, checked the website and reports that the findings are disturbing.

"It is just troubling that these things are treated as casually as any other game, like Monopoly or anything else on this Toys R Us site -- and I think it's something Christians should be aware of and really not support," he states.

Ouija boardHe further believes that Christians have an obligation to fight against it. "If you go to the comments section on the Toys R Us [web]site, you'll read comments from people who talk about being obsessed with it, talk about missing school for it, talk about the spirits they spoke to on the other side and how creepy it was," Phelan describes.

The communications manager adds that the primary groups that deny the evils of the Ouija board are the ones who deny the spirit world entirely. He goes on to say Christians have a biblical mandate.

"We're supposed to deal with the truth only," he notes. "We're supposed to have nothing to do with dark spirits. We're not supposed to dabble in anything that would compromise our souls, and that's exactly what this does."

The manufacturer of the product is Hasbro.

The only thing I know is that when I was about 12, and with a bunch of friends. We played the Ouija board all the time. I remember asking who I would marry. It gave me a first name of Tom and a first initial of S as the last name. Through the years I forgot what those were but several years ago, I found my old “Dear Diary” and as I was reading through it, I found the prediction and amazingly enough, that is precisely what my happened.

>”THIS IS NOT A TOY!”

Disagree. I had one as a kid. According to your logic, it turned me into a God-fearing family man who served his country for 24 years in the Air Force as a cop and a First Sergeant.

You can turn ANYTHING into something it’s not. I’m sure “Spin-The-Bottle” is seen as some Devil’s game by someone.

And, let me add, I’m sure there are a lot of Satan worshipers out there that never had one. (Oh, and just in case you ask, no, I’m not the voice of Satan. Just a regular guy with the voice of reality)

I did once but nothing happened. So I never tried it again.

Repeated attempts with a larger group of people will indeed yield results. You don't have to be a believer for it to work. I became a beliver only because results cannot be explained any other way.

By the way. I believe those things open you to spiritual invasion. You don't have to be a believer for that danger to be real either.

Not the same thing. The 8-ball is no different than dice. You randomize the result by shaking it. With a Ouija board, you invite spirits into your body to control your actions. There’s nothing random to it.

What kind of spirits? Supposedly of dead people. But dead people are in Heaven, in which case they’re saints and would never participate in something like a seance, or in Hell, in which case they are subject to demons. (OK, we Catholics believe in purgatory, but people are insensate while in purgatory, like Lazarus and the rich man, neither of whom could communicate with the world.) So really, you think you’re asking your great Aunt Mildred, but it can’t be Aunt Mildred, so it must be a demon pretending to be Aunt Mildred.

Now, you can say that you don’t believe that demons can be summoned through a mere cardboard game. But it’s not the cardboard that has any power; it’s the person seeking communication with the spirit world that does. You also may not believe that such a person has any power to summon demons, but then if you believe that, why would you pay twenty bucks?

The real danger is that the power of a Ouija board lies in the shadowy zone between the merely psychological and the spiritual. People “play,” not realizing how much power psychological effects can have to reveal stuff to us. (For instance, a girl asking the Ouija board who she’ll marry reveals her own desires, hopes, or expectations.) Once the psychological effects are revealed (and they can be quite powerful for some people), the temptation comes forth to go beyond harmless play and into really dangerous spiritual territory.

Who is more clueless, the people who believe a Ouija board works or the people who are afraid of it?

You took the words right out of my mouth.

This is straight from the mouth of one who never tried to use one of those things. I can assure you, these things work. It is an unsafe way to validate the spiritual realm.

Uh, no.

Sad to think that this formerly great firm (i.e.; G.I. Joe) has sunk to these depths.

They’ve always sold it, right with the Monopoly and Life games, ever since I was a little kid.

And that is why I bought it ... innocuous "game" ... NOT!

You assessments seem to be right on the mark. These are the same conclusions that became obvious to me once I experimented with those things at some depth.

Satan’s Chat Room.

Indeed! That is who manifested himself to us on a hot day in July. The house turned frigid cold .. even though the owners had no air conditioning. The cat walked in the door, arched its back, screeched and ran back out into the torpid heat. The youngest children in the house were referred to as "evil" by the Ouija board spirit.

I also have experience with those things.

Thank you!!! for the post and ping.

Years later, I related the experience of what happened on a hot July day, to a group of youth preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Not one of them slept that night and I received phone calls from many of the upset parents.

No the bible forbids dabbling in the occult and soothsayers. It seems like a sound idea to stay away from them.

Whatever human opinions are about these things, the Sacred Scriptures are very CLEAR regarding their avoidance.

Of course, believers know to stay away. There are unbelievers who don’t believe it’s the occult - but they will learn soon enough.

Ouija boards were out long before any movie you have seen.
