LEWISBURG - Bucknell University will host the series, "Avatar: Responses from Earth," this spring and fall.
The series is an examination of various real-life cultural perspectives on ecology from "real life" traditions and disciplines on Earth in response to the success of the film "Avatar" as a sci-fi environmental parable, according to Alf Siewers, associate professor of English at Bucknell University.
The series opens with the talk, "This Holy Earth: Ecological Vision in the Cosmic Cathedral," with Father Andrew Damick...
Damick, who is a founder of the Society for Orthodox Christian History in the Americas, will discuss Christian panentheism as an often forgotten approach to nature in the west.
"This spring, practitioners and scholars from varied traditions and disciplines on Earth - Christianity, feminist philosophy and Judaism - will explore what resources for environmental thinking may lie in terrestrial traditions," said Siewers.
A related event is the spring Nature and Human Communities Animal Studies lecture, "Do We Have Duties of Justice Toward Animals?" with Gary Steiner, Bucknell professor of philosophy...
Siewers said lectures in the fall will address Buddhist, Native American and environmental ethics perspectives on the environment.

Avatar is “Dances with Wolves” with 3 D. This is not a compliment.
Must drive Michael Behe crazy!
My mistake, I thought is said Lehigh! Probably still drives him crazy!
“Christian panentheism as an often forgotten approach to nature in the west.” -— Huh???
I thought it was “Dances With Smurfs in Outer Space”
Christian panentheism isn’t necessarily a contradiction of terms, although it addresses creation instead of Creator.
PANTHEISM asserts that “all is one” and the universe is God.
PANENTHEISM claims that God is greater than the universe and the universe is contained within God.
But it is a stretch to find anything compatible with Christianity in this hi-tech anti-human propaganda.
