A hunter is recovering from non-life threatening injuries after being shot by his dog on Saturday.
The Merced County Sheriff's Department said the 53-year-old man was hunting with a partner off Highway 152 near Los Banos Calif when he set down his shotgun to retrieve his decoy ducks.
The shotgun was loaded but the safety was on, according to authorities.
The victim was about 15 yards away, retrieving his decoys, when his female black Labrador retriever stepped on the gun.
Authorities said the dog disengaged the safety and hit the trigger at the same time, firing a shell with #2 shot. The man was struck in on the left side of his upper back.
The man was treated and released at the hospital the same day.
Never give a gun to a lab, they don’t know the first thing about gun safety.
A Border Collie or Aussie however..
Always keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
Are you talking about the dog or the gun?
Here’s an earlier version of the story, showing the writer’s complete lack knowledge in the firearms department:
LOS BANOS, Calif. — One California hunting dog apparently takes the term a bit too literally.
Authorities say a central California hunter was wounded when his own dog accidentally sent a bullet into his back.
The 53-year-old man was treated at Los Banos Memorial Hospital and released after a few hours.
The Merced County Sheriff’s Department says the man and a partner had been hunting near Highway 152 in the Los Banos area Saturday. The man set down his shotgun to retrieve some duck decoys and his female Labrador retriever stepped on it, causing the safety to disengage and the gun to fire, sending a shot into the hunter’s upper back.
The names of the man and dog have not been released.
“No. 2 for DUCKS? Lord have mercy, there wouldn’t be anything left but the drumsticks and wings . . . unless he (1) was really hunting Canadas; (2) expected not to be able to call the ducks in very close; (3) was going for a head shot every time.
Don’t put it down if it’s loaded, folks. Open the action.”
#2 steel shot is not an uncommon load for ducks. Plus, that particular area DOES have Canada, snow and Ross’ geese to hunt as well. He was probably covering all bases.
He’s still dumb for not unloading and opening the action, though. Why does the shotgun need to be loaded when it’s not in your hands?
You’re right - we still use lead shot in hunting tests. We’re miles and miles from any body of water larger than Lake Lanier! In fact, it’s pretty common for the judges to make some sort of throwaway comment like, “Well here we are on a duck hunt on this little tiny pond . . . “ Although we did have a problem one year because semi-migrating Canadas kept settling in the middle of the water series and interfering with the dogs (they were absolutely without fear). Turned out a nearby neighbor had been FEEDING the darned things. They must have thought the dogs had a sandwich or two hidden away somewhere.
I stand corrected! The waterfowl regs don’t apply to hunt test mallards.
The judge went out and "spoke" to the gunners, and they filled the next poor bird so full of lead that it's a wonder my dog could carry it.
My experience is that the girls stand a lot less nonsense from cripples than the boys. I have seen my oldest Lab, a cagey character, leap up in the air over a wounded bird to get behind it and grab it by the scruff. Then if they flap and quack too much she gives them a quick shake, "That's enough out of YOU, my fine fellow!" and they settle right down. A friend's little bitch will actually LIE DOWN on them until they quit fighting.
We use her to run down escapes from the crates because she is extremely soft-mouthed and won't muss a feather on a live bird.
I didn’t even know you could still own a gun in CA.
“I didnt even know you could still own a gun in CA.”
Or a dog. :-)
HOW U SHOOT KITTEHZ?
EAZY. U JUST DONT LEAD EM SO MUCH.
Damn! "OK, OK, I'll have your nuts put back on!"
Allow me to summarize:
