Made my first trip there back in 1965...and the last trip during the late 1990s. It is a fantastic fully built out movie set...not simply faux facades. Back in the 60s the men's rest room stalls still displayed the actor's name.
One could walk unescorted throughout the complex. The fortress compound and mission were a replica of the original....that's the way John Wayne wanted it.
It was always a comfort to know it was there, just outside of Brackettville, Texas....gotta be going there to get there. This is a loss....it will be missed.

Wow. My grandpa is supposed to be in a crowd scene of The Alamo. I only recently found out & was very surprised, as he was a crusty old-school cowboy who rode & broke horses. Never thought of him as a movie extra.
