Mountains Will See Highest Accumulation
UPDATED: 6:29 pm EST January 29, 2010
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- A huge winter storm is bearing down on the Carolinas.
The Upstate could see 3 to 5 inches of snow, with the potential for up to a foot of snow in the mountains. The storm could also bring significant sleet and ice.
Mixed rain and snow in the evening will give way to a period of accumulating snow. Roads are expected to become dangerous by midnight in areas north of Internet 85.
As the night wears on, snow will mix with and change to sleet and then freezing rain before diminishing around midday Saturday. Mixed snow and sleet is expected to result in hazardous driving conditions and a damaging accumulation of could topple trees and power lines.
A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet, and ice are expected or occurring. Heavy wet snow and/or ice accumulations may result in toppled trees and/or power lines. Travel is expected to become very hazardous or impossible.
An ice storm warning has been issued for areas from Newberry to Dillon, where as much as three-quarters of an inch of ice could coat trees and power lines.
Forecasters say some ice could form on bridges as far south as Columbia and Sumter.
Although uncertainty remains regarding the amount of precipitation that will fall, current indications are that total accumulations 10+ inches can be expected across North Carolina. Amounts may be a little less in the valleys of the southwest mountains, and in the Piedmont, where snow will mix with sleet and rain or freezing rain at times.
Snowfall totals may be higher across the high elevations of the mountains, especially in areas near the Blue Ridge.
Its pretty quiet here in the north as far as the weather is concerned. Its cold so the lake is booming tonight but we’ve barely got any snow in southern michigan.
I’m here on the ground watching the situation. Just got back from the grocery store. Long lines with carts filled with milk and white bread. If they bought eggs, coulda made French toast.
I bought fish and beer. Making beer battered fish. Better than milk & white bread - obuma steak.
The streets are vacant with not even a mouse about, unless you’re buying milk and white bread.
I’m down to 97 beers to last two days. Will be tight, but I think I can make it, unless my cheap neighbor drops in with his vacuum cleaner cousin. Then I’m toast.
Looked outside. No snowflakes visible. Probably hiding in the clouds in the sky. Full moon missing. Probably eaten by Gitchee makwa. Bad news.
Called my buddy in the Northwest Territory. No sign of snow there. Too cold, she said. But the polar bears on the move, floating down on ice floes to eat New Yorkers. Big, fat snacks. Good news.
Weatherman says 3 to 5 inches, with French toast if you bought eggs. Otherwise milk and white bread obuma steaks. Yuk!
Holding up well so far. Beer-battered fish all weekend. I will survive.
PLEASE, PLEASE ,PLEASE! let it snow in Summerville!!!!!!!

Here in Tulsa, everyone was making a run for the stores on Tuesday and Wednesday, as the Ice Storm came through on Thursday. Now, on Wednesday, in Tulsa, it was a beautiful day, a high of 60 degrees, and during part of the day, not a cloud in the blue sky.
It was kinda funny everyone scrambling for supplies on such a beautiful day. But, the next day... well... that’s when it all hit.
I’m in Ballentine on Lake Murray. No rain so far, around 44 F and there is a light, intermittent breeze. I wouldn’t mind a bit of snow, but am definitely not interested in freezing rain. We had that many years ago, with fallen and broken trees, downed power lines and it was an unpleasant mess.
NOAA says rain here in the Aiken area tonight and tomorrow. Nothing about ice or snow.
Just rain in Atlanta, but the bad weather is about an hour north of us.
You may be used to dealing with snow, but 1/2” of ice will bring down a lot of pine tree limbs,...which will bring down the power lines.
LOL. Milk and bread. Cracks me up when I see people buying that. Give me beef, whiskey and maybe some hot chocolate to add to the whiskey.
Just rain in Atlanta, but the bad weather is about an hour north of us.
I'll see about getting a Georgia thread going then..., for y'all... :-)
Yep. Preparedness is key.
I am in the Ft. Jackson area and remember that event too.
Ace Hardware in Anderson has sold out of snow sleds. I guess people are expecting a play day Saturday. Kept my friend busy all day selling everything from snow related, and propane gas too. It just started raining, 37 degrees. Hoping to keep warm.
32 in Sburg- no snow. Nevertheless, it’s so cold outside I saw a democrat walking down the street with his hands in his own pockets!!!
Nah. I’ll bet he stole the coat.
haha- touche-
12A DirectFire.
Tread head, eh?
Cold as Nancy Pelosi’s tit here in Western PA tonight too. But no precip in the forecast. ;~))
