What is “survial”?
Our forefathers made it, all over America.
And so would we.
“Urban Survival” is a myth, and a lie. Unrest will be controlled with food, as the population is not sustainable from the land.
Depending upon the strength of any military putting down insurrection, “raiding” (live close to Urbania, raid Urbania, return to the woods) is not even a very viable thing to plan for.
Survival will require the ability and determination to walk of into the mountains (desert, swamp), and never look back.
And “Winter” isn’t so bad, if you know how to deal with it. It will certainly weed out the wanna-bes. The swamps and desert have their own means, I suppose.
THE GOVERMENT WILL NOT BE YOUR FRIEND.
If the government learns you have supplies you will be called a hoarder and they will take them.
The main thing you need for survival is planing now.
You need food stores and ammo they will not be available.
you will need seeds to plant the garden and supplies to can or preserve them.
These need to be in place where you plan to hide out.
Interesting post.
Can't happen! After all we have the Far-left National Socialist wing of the Democrat Party in charge they have this economic thing sew up tighter that Nanci Pelosi’s face. /Industrial grade sarcasm
Ahem, anyways I've been considering this issue and one thing I'm wondering is what is the best type of venue for survival?
Meaning what type of ‘retreat’ situation should one favor:
Small family group 2 10 family members
Small group of friends 10 -20 people or 2-3 families
Medium sized group - 30 40 people.
Small, close knit town 100 200 people
The assumption with each of these scenarios that each member of these groups be at least competent with guns and other survival skills or at least won't scream, wet their pants and run away if they spot a gun.
Well we are in an ample rain and low population area but it does freeze here. Not usually too many days below 35º but enough of them.

Now we have to figure out a way to keep all of those damn yankee refugees out!

A modern society is a pretty hardy weed and isn't easy to kill. It can get REALLY bad, we may lose our freedom, we might be hungry, but I don't see a total collapse to prehistoric levels. And if that happens, I'd rather sail off to the South Seas, than hang around walking on "The Road" fighting off cannibals.
If the author means a Mad Max decline leading to something near biblical apocalypse then this analysis is far too shallow. In fact I would say that these areas that he has selected may be the absolute worst in that type of situation.
To best understand how to "get along with nothing" its best to ask those who actually did. There are reasons that "cold" was not one of the four horsemen but "pestilence" and "famine" were. The author needs to put more thought into what these terms mean and how they arrive before he goes on to plan Thunderdome.
Other lesser scenarios like "The Slightly Greater Depression" are going to present themselves in a manner that make entirely different concerns more prominent and require a different focus in preps and preplanning.
Take this with a grain of Salt; as numerous studies pointed out, in an economic collapse due to zombie infestation, you want to live ABOVE the frost line..... zombies freeze in winter, for the most part. This allows for relative freedom of movement.
I am set...land, guns, orchards and in inland SE Texas.
His map shows that parts of the coastal Pacific NW are also viable. Actually, if you’re planning for a major nuclear attack on the US, southern coastal Oregon is one of the best places to be. There are no targets in the area, and prevailing winds will carry the fallout away.
