Lots of things look silly in retrospect. But going into the situation it looks quite different. In the eyes of those who would have to take the blame if it had turned out to be a bomb and Kermit they had little choice but to treat it as a serious matter.
But the observation that the terrorists have already won is certainly spot on. Just think of how much time, money and resources are needed across the country to handle these situations. And these have to be at the ready 24/7, every week, month, etc.
Until we learn to get a handle on the people who intend us harm, not the means they might or might not use, we will be slowly but surely losing our freedoms.
