“Should there be restrictions on hair length for adults as well?”

I have a dress code where I work.

I got the feeling from watching some of this that it is just more of the self-indulgent “Me! Me! Me! Look at ME!!!” crap.

The parents sound like the type that would kill somebody they didn’t like at the local soccer match...

To MrEdd

Re: “Similarly you personally should stop advocating that nuns and Jews be burned in pile in the street. Really, it’s offensive equalitybeforethelaw.” “We know you say that because you don’t like hair and the Nazis wore short hair.”

Response: Huh? MrEdd, I really think you have me confused with someone else or are yourself confused. I spoke of “self expression” versus “self mastery”, two concepts on the same continum. My concern is simply the father’s pig headedness is scaring his son for selfish reasons. I have no idea how NAZIs and dead nuns and jews came into this discussion. Please review my posts and reconsider your attack on me.

Note: In regards to your characterization that I “don’t like hair and the Nazis wore short hair”, let me point out that NAZI soldiers wore their hair longer than is permissible under US Military standards. You would be hard pressed to find many NAZIs sporting a crew cut. Finally, I have worn my hair long and short in my lifetime. But when I was 4 my parents cut my hair. Little Taylor should be allowed to form friendships at his school. A simple trim would permit him to be one of the kids instead of having to defend his father’s opions as a 4 year old. Lighten up Francis.

No person who thinks it is appropriate for the government to dictate citizens' hair length is anything remotely like a conservative. They are instead leftist totalitarians who have made the state their god.

I'd think most people would describe the Amish etc as pretty conservative in their beliefs and how they live. The Amish wouldn't put up with somebody outside their society telling them how they should dress or wear their hair, but they'd certainly consider it appropriate for the society itself to decide if something was crossing the bounds of what is acceptable.

If people in a community elect school board members that set those hair-length rules, and the community (with only one known exception) is happy with those rules, then they should be followed.

Do you feel that it is opposed to conservative principles to limit people to only marrying one person at a time, or of the opposite sex, or even that they be limited to marrying people, as opposed to somebody marrying his dog? Thats a personal liberty issue.

A society can define the rules to differentiate the people that wish to be part of a society apart from those that don't.

One observation. Looking at the parents and the kid, I’m thinking that the long hair is not the primary problem.

Sure. And as I understand it they sometimes practice "shunning", which is entirely their right. It is not their right to throw someone in jail for crossing those boundaries. Nor is it their right to extort money at gunpoint from unwilling persons to fund the enforcement of those standards.

If people in a community elect school board members that set those hair-length rules, and the community (with only one known exception) is happy with those rules, then they should be followed.

I disagree. What you are describing is straight democracy, a tyranny of the majority. Morally, a governmental body has a very limited role. Regulating hair length is just as far outside that legitimate role as creating dietary laws or establishing an official school religion.

One problem for the alleged "conservative" who wants to enforce community standards is that community standards change. If Dearborn, Michigan becomes majority Muslim due to demographic changes, is it right for lifelong non-Muslim Dearborn residents to have to send their little girls to school in hijabs to conform to the new community standards?

Do you feel that it is opposed to conservative principles to limit people to only marrying one person at a time, or of the opposite sex, or even that they be limited to marrying people, as opposed to somebody marrying his dog? Thats a personal liberty issue.

Excellent example. A properly educated conservative knows that marriage is outside the legitimate scope of government. Marriage was created and is regulated by God, not some corrupt man-made system. The idea of going to the state to beg permission and/or pay a fee to marry someone ought to be repellent to conservatives. The only reason the gays are getting the traction they are on the "same-sex marriage" issue is that a long time ago marriage was cheapened by making it a civil government matter and now the gays are demanding (with some measure of justification) the same state stamp of approval for their chosen sexual behaviors.

In a sane world, nobody would think of asking government for permission to marry, anymore than we ask permission to read a book, plant a garden or have children. Sure, you'd have some people who would claim to be married to their own sisters, or an Oldsmobile, or the number eleven, but the rest of us would simply regard them as the fruitcakes they are and go on about our business.

How about a purple mohawk and a bone through the nose? Just taking the trip down the slippery slope...

I'd rather my kid look like that then have a government paid bureaucrat dictate his physical appearance.

Very well. Let's consider other standards. Should girls wear their skirts as short as they wish? How about mirco-minis without undergarments?

Should boys enjoy freedom of expression if they want to wear mini-skirts?

I'm just curious as to where you would draw the line.

I have no idea how NAZIs and dead nuns and jews came into this discussion.

The same way wearing normal male hair styles became a lack of discipline and self mastery, or a topic of Sloth's post.

The boy's hair is a normal style for males. It has been in the US though-out the time from it's founding until now, except for a brief period beginning with the US involvement in the first world war and ending in the mid 1950s.

Long hair is no more degenerate in this boy than it was for the men seen in post number 80, men you must by your assertions here despise, so yes, I have been given every empirical tool by yourself to deny that you have any conservative credentials.

You do not.

Lets see... according to you:

1. The Declaration of Independence was signed by aimless, people lacking self mastery.

2. The same must also be true for the men who drafted the constitution..

3. The men who fought the civil war, and their officers? Degenerates.

4. Jesus of Nazareth must have been scared by his pig headed father into a vow that resulted in long hair.

Sloth wasn't addressing any of these things, just the normalcy of the boys haircut and the inappropriateness of a government entity dictating how civilians may be allowed to groom their own bodies. Nothing else. And this is of no more consequence that combing to the right or combing to the left.

You personally injected mastery and insinuated behaviors of the parents. So you personally are fair game for any similar insinuation and I will remind you that you have no real refutation for my point #4, so Nuns and Nazis is pretty tame.

AS I said before, you went inserting material into someone elses post, so you have zero grounds tho whine like a little brat about me attributing Nuns and Nazis into yours. That is the very point.

You don't like the heat get out of the kitchen.

Little Taylor should be allowed to form friendships at his school. A simple trim would permit him to be one of the kids instead of having to defend his father’s opinions as a 4 year old.

Little Taylor's friends are four. They want to get the best toys at recess. They won't much give a crap about Taylor's hair or his dad unless someone with your expressed mentality tries to tell them that Taylor's hair, and maybe Taylor's dad are bad. Just like Jesus Christ's hair and dad were bad, evidently.

Lighten up Francis.

You mean, don't act like a small child's hair length is something so important that it is acceptable policy to send them home from school for it? I never did that.

Rules and standards are necessary in order for a civilized society to function. Without them, there is anarchy. Anarchy is no less serious in the schoolroom than any where else.

So it begins

Self-mastery should be taught by parents.

You get bristly mitts by encouraging that.
