The Tennessee Aquarium's first penguin chick, a macaroni, now has a name to match her feisty disposition: Pepper.
Aquarium election officials reviewed 1,000 submissions from a naming contest and picked the name, which four different people suggested.
For $15, visitors to the aquarium can meet Pepper and the other penguins up-close and personal. Starting Jan. 16, aquarium workers will take two groups of six visitors per day for a behind-the-scenes look at Penguins’ Rock from a private observation deck.
OK history trivia — correct me if i missed it.
Yankee Doodle Dandy “... stuck a feather in his hat & called it macaroni.”
British song about time of revolution. Upper class Brits at the time toured Europe. Italy was a favorite. They laughed at what they considered effeminate dress of the Italian “dandies” whom they called “macaronis.”
Also many voyages going round the world & discovering new things. They saw the penguins with the little feather sticking out & called them “macaroni.”
Pepper? Hah! Everybody knows that the “First Chick’s” name is Michelle.
