Haven't played the video yet ~ but in reality there's no need to. The phrase "Pact with the Devil" is a fairly well-known figure of speech. Another term is called "A Faustian bargain" as in "to strike a Faustian bargain".

And, as it turns out, Haiti gained its liberation only to fall into societal and economic collapse. They asked for French businessmen and plantation managers to come back.

That, in fact, turned out to be a Faustian bargain.

That particular deal didn't play out all that well. The French stayed and the Haitians stayed poor!

I didn’t know that the French stayed. I do know that a mulatto class (you know, people with light skins who didn’t speak a Negro dialect) fought for dominance with black leaders from the beginning.
