USC football: Pete Carroll says Seahawks opportunity 'came out of nowhere' (Carroll Resigns)
Los Angeles Times ^ | January 11, 2010 | Gary Klein

Pete Carroll is off to the NFL He will meet today with USC players and then begin his transition back to pro football, where he last coached in 1999. I spoke with Carroll early this morning about his decision to leave USC and his new job with the Seattle Seahawks. On the possibility of landing what he considered a perfect NFL opportunity: “I had given up on it, but it came out of nowhere.” On whether he left because of possible NCAA sanctions: “Not in any way. Because I know where we stand. It’s just a process we have to go through. We know we’ve fought hard to do right.” On whether he had any regrets: "I’ve given everything I’ve had. There was never going to be a good time.”

He’ll have to be better than good if he’s going to fix the Seahawks.

And when the NCAA comes down hard on USC, Pete will be far away. The only ones who will pay are the kids.

The NCAA was still investigating Bush and now McKnight. (Not including the basketball team.)
He saw an open window and took a dive.

People like to talk about how Pete was a so-so (at best) pro coach in the past. His so-so is better than we (Seahawks fans) have had for a couple of years now. Add to that what he may have learned over the past 9 seasons being one of the best college coaches out there and I for one am cautiously optimistic about the future of my favorite club.

But ownership needs to be patient and give this man time to build the team. At least 3 years to make it his own, showing improvement all the way. Even though Seattle won one more game this year than last, no one who watched them can really argue that they were “better” than last years’ team.

He’ll have to be “Holmgren good.”

Saban has a chance to make history if he were to get a national championship with a third different school. Carroll and Saban are good friends. Don't count it out. Saban has never demonstrated any loyalty to this point. Why start now?

Yeah, wouldn’t surprise me to see Saban’s name tossed out there, or Lane Kiffen’s. But the leading name is Jack Del Rio. He’s likely worn out his welcome in Jacksonville anyway.

I suspect USC will do better in future years without Pete Carroll than San Diego State has done since Don Coryell went to the NFL.

At least friends and family in Washington may now feel compelled to cheer for my USC coach!

Hmmmmm....I’ll bet most of Pete’s USC teams could have beat most Seahawk teams, in any given year....

USC will not go with an unproven Div I coach. I don't see them pulling one up from a “lesser” conference either.

They did have success with a .500 pro coach, so Del Rio may be the one.

Pete knows how to motivate college kids. I’m not sure he knows how to motivate multi-millionaire adults. His past NFL experience seems to support this view.

Big name coach may not want to come in and face the music with the NCAA.

My thoughts exactly. I have been saying for a long time that Carroll was going to stay at USC, primarily because of his previous NFL failures as a head coach. Then I read the reports on the offer: 40% increase in current compensation, from 5 million to 7 million per year.

Hard to say no to that.

I have the perfect coach for USC — Ron Zook! Although we will be so sad to see him go here in Illinois!

If that’s the case then USC may be SOL.

the past 9 seasons being one of the best college coaches out there

If you view college coaching as being comprised of four primary requirements:

1. Recruiting
2. Preparation
3. Organization (having a good staff)
4. XX's and OO's

I would say that Carroll excelled at 1, 2 and 3.

He has surrounded himself with some great coaching talent starting with Norm Chow. In the last two years though a lot of that talent has left and USC's record has dropped.

Recruiting? Hard to find a team that has had a better run of excellent QB's and LB's then USC.

His weakness? Probably X's and O's, which is going to hurt him in the NFL, unless he brings in a great staff. Thanks Coach for turning USC around, it was a good run.
