Israel dips into hummus world record

A restaurant in Israel has claimed the world record for the largest plate of hummus, beating a record set in Lebanon last year.

The four tonnes of the chickpea dip mashed up by 50 chefs in Abu Gosh, west of Jerusalem, almost doubles the Guinness World Record set in Beirut two months ago.

The rivalry between Israel and Lebanon over hummus taps into a deep-seated animosity.

It's not that spicy, it's not that salty - in fact, hummus does not really have that much flavour at all.

I love hummus!

But seriously, a rivalry over who can make the biggest plate of hummus? This sounds like the rivalry between Jordan & Dubai over who could build a taller flagpole for a larger flag. What is it with the Middle East?

Not much flavor? Hummus has a wonderfully subtle nutty, earthy flavor made richer by olive oil.

Try toasting up some pita bread brushed with olive oil and topped with zaatar (a Middle Eastern spice medley). Then dip quartered pieces into hummus blended with toasted pistachios or chopped black olives.

Beats Doritos and salsa any day.

I put roasted garlic in mine. That solves the blandness problem. And a drizzle of very good olive oil on top. Yum.

I have a really bad attitude about food “records”....they’re almost always a waste and they’re never impressive.

I thought hummus was something you mixed with dirt to enrich the soil.

I was right.

Anyone can make the BIGGEST plate of hummous.

The trick is, Who can make the BEST?

The most popular brand around here is named “Sabra”.

The Greeks invented Humus, I think. It is mentioned in the Talmud. Now it’s turned into some mad nationalistic thing with the Guinness Book of World Records.
