1 The Searchers

This John Ford Western chronicles the efforts of a Confederate veteran (Wayne) to track down the daughter of his murdered brother.

2 Rio Bravo

The Duke and Dean Martin are the pair of old friends at the heart of this Howard Hawks hit, in which the pair tussles with a local lawbreaker.

3 The Quiet Man

Wayne shows his softer side with this drama about the tempestuous affair between an Irish-American expat and an Irish woman.

4 The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

In this John Ford Western, Wayne stars as a rancher who pairs up with a law school grad (James Stewart) to take down the bad guy.

5 The Shootist

The actor's last movie ever finds Wayne starring opposite Lauren Bacall and James Stewart as a gunslinger dying of cancer.

6 True Grit

Wayne's Oscar-winning turn as aging sheriff Rooster Cogburn finds him trekking into Indian territory to avenge a man's death.

7 Stagecoach

For Wayne's breakout performance, he plays good-at-heart outlaw Ringo, who wins over a group of lawmen defending an east-bound train.

8 She Wore a Yellow Ribbon

This vivid, meditative Western finds Wayne portraying an aging war hero struggling with his impending retirement.

9 Red River

This early Howard Hawks Western stars Wayne as a rancher who battles mutiny among his men as he drives his cattle up the Chisholm Trail.

10 Sands of Iwo Jima

This 1949 war flick finds Wayne starring as John Stryker, a marine sergeant charged with leading his men to war.

Rio Bravo

I think there is a federal law or statute against mentioning Rio Bravo without also mentioning El Dorado.

We'll let it go this time but don't let it happen again.

Another really really bad John Wayne movie is “Jet Pilot”.
its only redeeming features are some cool flying scenes with F86 Sabres. You really hate it when it goes back to the people & the dialog.

Yeah the Wayne movie, “The Conquerors” is in my special DVD collection of movies “So Bad Their Good!”.

Who in the WORLD placed Rio Bravo in front of Stagecoach and the Sands of Iwo Jima??!! Not to mention the Quiet Man??!! Perhaps you should stick to your favorite “Pee Wee Herman” or “Ted and Bill’s” movies in the future.

I’d go with Red River as my favorite. Maybe we should go the a top 15 list?

Include:

The Cowboys

The Shootist

All 3 John Ford/Monument Valley Cavalry movies

‘89?

They were really good in ‘49 and ‘57!

PISC didn’t allow fliks back in the ‘50s—it was much better that way.

Who could top ‘Sands’ lines such as “No one ever starts out to get knee walking, commode hugging drunk” and “I’ll sail again”!

And “El Dorado” instead of “Rio Bravo”. Although the two movies had the same plot, Robert Mitchum playing the Dean Martin part in “El Dorado” made it a much better movie because the very talented Mitchum, unlike the over rated Martin, had to do some acting to play a drunk.

I agree but you gotta admit, Dean didn't have to act to play the part!

Our family favorite was always McClintock! Having raised three girls, when they got PO'd at their beaus they'd always quote the movie:

"Shoot him daddy! Shoot him! You're my father and if you love me you'll shoot him!"
