I make bullwhips and cook.
When I get my garage built, I plan to have a blacksmithing setup in it. I want to make swords someday.

Well, I have 6 of those hobbies, Mr G has 8 and if you throw in the junior g’s there are several more.
Perhaps rather than “manly” hobbies, it should read “hobbies”.

The entire web site “The Art of Manliness” has some pretty good stuff in it. Lots of information that is being passed by is in it. I might not agree with all, but overall it looks good.
As far as reading goes, the stack of books at the side of my bed is probably 2 to 3 feet at present.

Not knitting. Try needlepoint instead.
Seriously, my granddad used to knit castnets. Wish I knew how to do that.

Airsoft is another good manly activity. My husband and son do that.
I think online war games is another manly activity.

Hmmmm, let’s see:
1. Barbequeing / grilling
2. Horse riding and training
3. Martial arts
4. Reading - lots and lots of reading
5. Marksmanship (rifle, pistol, shotgun - and a 1919A4 if I ever get it put together)
6. Ammo reloading
7. The occasional fine cigar.
8. The occasional wee dram ‘o single malt Scotch
9. Beer brewing (not for a while, though). Still have all the gear.
10. Knives and tomahawks.
11. IT and network engineering expert.
12. SUV enthusiast. I heart my Avalanche.
Come to think of it, there aren’t hobbies - they’re avocations.

They didn’t even mention Blowing Stuff Up. I mean it falls in between chemistry and marksmanship. Would Mythbusters be as popular as it is if it wasn’t for the all American hobby of blowing stuff up.

Ham radio is manly?
My impression of that hobby is that it attracts the kind of man that would go to a Star Trek convention. You know, a super-nerd.

Knitting? Ballroom dancing? Gardening?
I enjoy the AOM blog greatly ... but those are odd choices for manly hobbies.

Still — landscaping, lawnmowing, farming, etc. are hardly “hobbies”. They’re either occupations or household chores. Calling “gardening” a manly hobby when referring to landscaping is like calling dishwashing a womanly hobby.
And, if they’re referring to “gardening” in the traditional hobby sense of the word — it ain’t manly.
