I’m sure it was the same fear syndrome of “don’t get attacked by the liberal media, they’ll call me a crazy birther, it’s easier not to rock the boat, and the mother of all excuses: what if successful with riots breaking out and get accused of blood on the hands?”
This is why I always say, any successful reversal of the Communist path has to start by severely punishing the Media.
