If your budget is only $600, get an AK - which should cost you only $400 to $450 for a nice one, and spend the rest on ammo and accessories.

You can get an AK with some extras for under $600. I actually have an inexpensive removable mount and scope the one I have got. It is more accurate than what people tend to give them credit for. It is a lot of fun to shoot and very easy to maintain. It is a little underpowered for deer hunting. Depending on the state you would have also have to buy a five round magazine.
The 7.62x39 cartridge is good for reloading and casting your own bullets from tire weights which can save a lot of money if you are on a budget.

My budget is around 600$. M-1 Garand from the civilian marksmanship program. 30-06 has authority enough for everything and an 8 round clip (yes clip) keeps you from Rambo thoughts.
