My wife bought me a hunting rifle for Christmas. Actually, she gave me "permission".( haha) I already have a nice assortment of shotguns and .22's. I'm looking for a drop and stop rifle. One that will drop a deer and stop an "evil-doer". So, what should I get???
Have to checked on GunBroker.com? Fantastic site.

My son and I each have a Howa/Hogue in .308 with the Nikko Sterling..consecutive serial numbers, also. We’re both impressed with the way they shoot. Perfect field rifles, too, with the synthetic stock and plain jane finish. Can’t really be hurt.
Don’t get me started on the Savage 250-3000. I had one I inherited from my grandfather, model 99 lever action. Had the original sling on it. Some jerk broke into my apartment and stole it.
I was sick when I found out.
I’m planning on purchasing another rifle late in 2010. I’m either going with a Weatherby in a belted magnum round or buying a stainless Savage in 250 with the accu-stock.
I'm so sorry about the theft. My Savage 250-3000 is much older than I ... my late FIL bought it, probably in the late 1930's. It is a model 99 lever action with a single power scope and a piece of (used to be) white cotton rope for a sling. I never changed the scope or piece of rope because it had become part of the tradition associated with the gun.
My FIL killed many a deer with that rifle, my husband killed his first deer with it some 50 years ago, and I killed my first deer with it 5 years ago. My youngest son never harvested a deer with the Savage before he bought my Howa. However, his wife is now target practicing with it and will hopefully use it to kill her first deer this year.
We love the tradition.
I don’t know about TN but in NC faster and easier would in fact be “less of a pain”. But thanx anyway.
Well, he sorta did. He obviously objected to the only method he knew of on the grounds that it was inconvenient. So if you offer an alternative that's technically possible but no more convenient, could see his reply.
A good bolt action rifle (I prefer Ruger) chambered for .308, but then what would you expect someone with a user name of 762X51 to recommend???
You bought a nice gun!!
Love it!!
Just make sure you pick weapon #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7, ETC.. at the same time so you can get them ALL!!!
one other gun just came to mind
saiga 308 semi auto , based on ak action made in russia
about 600 dollars
I have seen used 308 saigas for as low as $400..of course not when I had enough money to buy one that is.
Thats the rifle I really want. Ive an AR-15 and an SKS but this one intrigues me.
The poor man’s M1-A
BEFORE you get the Mini, go to www.cdnninvestments.com and order several of the ruger factory made 20 round mags. Aftermarket mini 14 mags are notoriously unreliable.
Years ago I found that “nails” fired from a 3.75 rocket tube on an airplane provided by the US Gumint killed most things in the vicinity of detonation.
Mine fell into a vat of cosmoline. Terrible, terrible accident. Gave them all a decent burial, though.
Not to be left out of the suggestion box-I vote for a Saiga .308 with a holographic sight. If you find the sight cheap, you can come in around 600 bucks.
Yes, I looked all over. Finally found one about 60 miles up the road, got it this morning!!!
