Urban Meyer stepping down as Florida coach

Urban Meyer is stepping down as coach at Florida because of health concerns that came to light when he was admitted to a hospital because of chest pains following the Southeastern Conference championship game.

The 45-year-old Meyer resigned Saturday, calling it quits after five seasons in Gainesville and two national titles. He leaves Florida with a 56-10 record that includes a 32-8 mark in league play and a school-record 22-game winning streak snapped early this month against Alabama.

"I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program," Meyer said in a statement. "I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family."

Meyer said he consulted with his family, his doctors, school president Bernie Machen and athletic director Jeremy Foley before deciding it is in his best interest to focus on his health and family.

Meyer will hold a news conference in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon and will coach his final game in the Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati on New Year's Day.

"Coach Meyer and I have talked this through and I realize how hard this was for him to reach this decision," Foley said. "But the bottom line is that coach Meyer needed to make a choice that is in the best interest of his well being and his family. I certainly appreciate what he has meant to the University of Florida, our football program and the Gator Nation. I have never seen anyone more committed to his players, his family and his program. Above all, I appreciate our friendship."

Pretty crazy I must admit. I like the the choice of Kelly for coach at ND. Maybe I will be able to enjoy watching them again. I did not care much for Charlie.

Your probably right as per saving his life.Bama looked darn good in that game. Texas will have there hands full. Florida, and Tebow will put on a good showing for their coaches last game. Good luck against Cinci.

Good defensive coach. Would be a good fit at Michigan next year when Rich Rod gets the boot. Now that I think of it Maybe that's not such a good idea.

I’m a Bearcat season ticket holder and hate to see Kelly go. You’ll love BK. Kelly is a very good coach, a great motivator and a fantastic PR guy, the perfect fit for ND.

Surprisingly, Kelly is a flaming Mass. liberal. Go figure.

Anybody else suspect that the offer of an NFL job will cause Meyer to suddenly feel a whole lot better?

He’s going to find it a whold lot different in the NFL when you have to buy talent for REAL.

When I said that, I was just voicing my typical Georgia Bulldog suspicions.

Meyer, however, always has been a coach who keeps one eye on the next rung up the ladder. After two national championships and with his prize mule, Tim Tebow, graduating it might be time for another step up.

I get the Gators around her mad when I call Meyer “the Charlie Crist of college football” but that’s pretty much how I see the guy: an upwardly-mobile job-hopper.

Chest pains? Maybe so. But other coaches have dealt with that. I can’t help thinking that there is another motive in play here.

You absolutely nailed it. It was Tibo withdrawl.

We were teasing around the office about Crist. He has moved every 3 years. Now I wonder if in three years he will Leave Notre Dame and Go to Alabama. LOL

I still hate Sabin. What a twit. Walks out before bowl games when he has signed contracts. Contracts mean nothing to these people. GRRR But we still have IZZO

Sad. It’s the same reason Tom Osborn stepped down at Nebraska.

Cincinnati has been stringing together some good seasons as of late.Hope they keep it going. As far as Kelly being a flaming lib, no surprise Pete Carrol worships at the same alter, still great coach's.What are your thoughts concerning a prediction vs Florida?

The Bearcats will score often. Tebow could run for a 150+. Should be a real barn burner but I don't think I'll be happy at the end.
