Slim was working at the county lockup, B wing.
Back then I was trying to get over the trauma of the 7.1 earthquake we had in October. Not a happy holiday time for me.
I was just out of North Carolina looking for a Job.
I remember clearly because there was a fight between the cons over watching the Panama coverage versus Yo! MTV Raps.
That was the coldest Christmas I remember. 20 below zero for days in New England.
I was in transit between duty stations. From Marine Barracks, Washington DC, to report to Marine Corps Recruiting Station, Little Rock, Arkansas on or about January 2, 1990.
While visiting my parents during transit I received a phone call from a fellow Marine informing me that we had both just picked up Sergeant. But it wasn’t official yet so I had to check in to my new duty station as a Corporal and then go change my uniform shirt with my Sergeant chevrons.
Oh, what memories...
Is 1989 really long enough ago to be “history”?
I used to watch “Yo! MTV Raps” on Saturday Mornings — I was probably around 14 at the time. Not a big fan of rap music but, looking back, those tunes were probably “better” than the one’s today.
Sure, just think about all that’s happened between then and now.
Your post is history and as soon as I press the "post" button for this post, my (this) post will be history as well.
Okay. Now I’m really depressed.
Ah, the death of Nicolae Ceausescu and his rotten wife. Running around a courtyard while squealing like pigs. Saturday Night Live had a sketch showing cast members at his supposed open casket, who kept killing him on the off chance that he wasn’t dead yet.
Pity he and his family couldn’t have met their end like Mussolini, suspended on meat hooks, upside down. A fitting end to fascists and communists.
Blistering cold in Philly, too. I remember it well.
The Cure’s “Disintegration” was frozen in my tape deck the entire winter. To this day, I can only listen to that album when it’s cold.
I can't believe it was 20 years ago. Am I really that old, and who is that grey-haired fat guy staring at me in the mirror every morning?
Merry Christmas everyone!
Do you think Reid, Pelosi, Nelson, etc know it’s Ceausescu Day?
Are you still in your 20s, though?
“Romanian revolution and the execution of President Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena on Christmas day.”
Ceausescu (and his wife) were the worst of the worst. It’s no surprise they got it in the neck when so many other Eastern Bloc leaders were simply thrown out of office.
A Romanian friend of mine told me that in Nicolae Ceausescu’s final years, he was so paranoid and intent on stamping out dissent, the Securitat police would routinely roust people for things as trivial as wearing a western brand of blue jeans. There is also a story (I cannot say how true) that Elena used to have prime cuts of meat (hand-prepared by chefs, no less) flown in each week to feed her pet dogs when the average Romanian was subject to severe food rationing. She is supposed to have referred to food shortage protesters as “greedy little worms.”
Now, they’re both worm food themselves. I find that both amusing and highly satisfying.
Have an extra egg nog.
