What Are Your Favorite Foreign Language Films?
Self ^ | 12/19/09 | Randita

I really enjoyed the responses from last week's "What Are Your Favorite Movies Made Before 1950?" thread (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2406295/posts).

So here's another movie topic - favorite foreign language films of any era. (Hey, we need a pleasant distraction from the debacle going on in DC!)

If you know the date or even decade of the film and the language, please include it.

Thank you and enjoy!

You would probably like Konchalkovksy’s “Siberiade”

Life Is Beautiful (Italian) - 1997 Cinema Paradiso (Italian) - 1988 Amelie (French) - 2001 Rosenstrasse (German) - 2003 The Last Days of Sophie Scholl (German) - 2005

Love all of those. The last 10 minutes of Sophie Scholl stayed with me a long time.

Excellent film. We got it from Netflix, then ended up buying a copy.

Thanks for the tip about TCM. I’ll keep an eye out for those and record them. I imagine the only other way to see many of these is through Netflix.

El Mariachi (Spanish)

I assume this is the originial, low-budget film. It was really good, then he Hollywooded-up his remake.

Yes, Ushpizin was hilarious. And it had a great message.

That’s why I like Medved, who recommended both Ushpizin and Rosenstrasse. He likes movies with a redeeming message and so do I.

Ever since I was a kid, just looking at Nosferatu gives me the creeps.

Richard Gere made an attempt at this character in Sommersby.
