Saints the soul of America's city
ESPN ^ | Dec 18, 2009 | Wright Thompson

The soul of the city is coming off the practice field and headed toward the showers. They are a motley group, undrafted guys and late-round fliers, players cast off from other teams. Brees landed in town after an injury convinced the Chargers that his best days were behind him. "When we came here," he has said, "I was in the process of rebuilding, as well."

Quarterback Drew Brees and the Saints' potent offense have produced a 13-0 record heading into their home game Saturday night against Dallas.

Running back Mike Bell was out of football. So was cornerback Mike McKenzie, who watched the games from the stands with a mouthful of food before getting the call a few weeks ago. Darren Sharper arrived unwanted and has resurrected his career. Running back Pierre Thomas wasn't drafted. Star wide receiver Marques Colston wasn't drafted until the seventh round of the 2006 draft, and his college football program, Hofstra, just folded.

It goes on and on. This is a team of underdogs. "It's a bunch of guys that feel like they have something to prove," McKenzie says. "We have a lot of late draft picks and free agents that are now starting. It is a team full of guys who are probably viewed as overachievers."

No matter what you think about New Orleans, you gotta love the Saints. I'm not much of a football fan, and leave the smack talk job to my husband. Despite my lukewarm attitude towards football, even I've got the fever. WHODAT!

This is a good read for anyone who has affection toward New Orleans. AND, I learned that John Besh is a Marine! All the more reason to frequent his restaurants.

New Orleans is “America’s City”?

That’s just great. Perfect. “America’s City” is now a city of liberal whiners and losers who didn’t have enough common sense to get out of the way of a category 5 hurricane, then bitched that they were neglected because of racism.

Given a choice to name , I’ll choose a city of another state that was hit by that same hurricane...Mississippi. At least they stood up, took responsibility and helped each other.

New Orleans? Pah.

All that crap aside, The Saints are a good team...good for them. They have suffered a long time...

I don’t “gotta love the Saints.” I hope Dallas beats ‘em by 50. And I have to say, I was disgusted by the treatment of the Saints as a football team by the national announcing teams during Katrina-—it was libtards wall to wall.

Please do not confuse the welfare state people showcased by the mainstream media during Katrina with the million people of the Greater New Orleans area. We evacuated. We rebuilt without much help from our insurance companies or the government. We helped our neighbors and took responsibility. I'm really tired of the New Orleans bashing. NOLA is a great city with wonderful people. Don't confuse the government and people of inner city New Orleans with the strong, conservative people of the surrounding suburbs. Metairie, Covington, Chalmette, Kenner are all heavily Republican areas and their citizens fill the Superdome on Sundays. God bless New Orleans and Geaux Saints!!!

Criminals and New Orleans used in the same sentence? Bwa-hahahah.

Awwww; don't be hatin. Just because our team of (law abiding) rag-tag underdogs might actually make something of themselves for the first time in 40+ years isn't a reason to resent the fact that you don't live in a happy state.

It is amazing what the Ain’ts are doin, and you have to know that Dallas let the wrong assistant coach go.

Well, count me mistaken. I would not have guessed it was a conservative area. My mistake.

Of course, I get a lot of people who want to paint Massachusetts residents with a broad brush, but I can’t say don’t blame me for the government, I’m a conservative.

Never seems to work for me.

And, by the way, in case that didn’t come across correctly, I am being genuinely sympathetic, not smarmy.
