Very sad about the death of the dog and very cowardly from the policeman but now we should be used to the fact that the Police have many cowards and thugs in their ranks. Why didn’t he fire a shot in the air and that would have scared the dog.

Because that would be irresponsible, and would endanger human beings.

It seems that the dog latched on to the cop. All the cop had to do was sit still and chill until the handler coaxed the dog off. This cop is one cowardly son of a bitch.

An attack dog that will not listen to it's handler needs to be put down.

Firing into the air is dangerous, and any cop that would do it should be terminated. Maybe he should have tazed the pooch? (don't taze me massa)

Yes.
Always a good idea to fire a shot into the air.
The bullet goes to heaven and stays there.

Seriously.
This has happened a few times that I can recall.
If a dog attacked you (really attacked, like police dogs are trained to do), would you shoot it?

Um, police dogs are intentionally desensitized to the sound of gunfire. It's part of the training regime. Police have an instant to make a decision, and an eternity for every armchair quarterback to second guess(like you). Now, I AM a cop and , but even so I am not under the impression that I have all the facts to this story. And as regards the "cowards and thugs" comment there are idiots in every agency. But they all have the same problem: They gotta hire from the human race!

Here endeth the lesson,

CC

“very cowardly from the policeman”

How ignorant of you,, too much knee jerk cop-hatred there sir. Let a trained police dog attack you, so we can all see how it’s properly handled. Not to mention,, the burglar is still hiding somewhere close by,,,possibly armed. How much time do you REALLY want to screw around with that dog?

It would have been much better to fire a shot through an onlooking preschool child, and then growl at the dog, "If I could do that to a kid, imagine what I'd do to you!!!"
