I just recently bought an iPhone and it was always asking me if I wanted to join this or that Wi-Fi network. Sometimes at a McDonalds or at a Starbucks. Since I don’t even know what they are, I always declined.

Your iPhone's default WiFi setting is to sniff out WiFi AP's and ask if it's okay to connect. You can turn that off if you like. The icons that come up in the list will tell you if it's a locked AP or public.

Sometimes it's annoying, it pops up as you're driving (someone else is actually driving) along somewhere, when you're not interested in connecting or won't be there long enough.

Other times it's nice to have it let you know. Like you visit the neighborhood pub or restaurant and they have a public AP. Once you tell the iPhone it's okay to connect to a particular site, it will remember it and automatically connect when you're in range.
