It is mind-bogglingly stupid in the case of a missing family member possibly a victim of foul play where minutes or hours could make a difference for someone who is innocent to delay communicating with the authorities until after hiring and briefing a lawyer.

Well, I think we can say "this about that"....
It's mind-bogglingly stupid in the mind of a non-professional (i.e., "not an attorney") to do this...
And -- we can say that it is very smart in the mind of a professional (i.e., attorneys who advise on these things...).
Okay, so do we take the advice of a "non-professional" or a "professional"... :-)
