December 11, 2009 Team Tiger: The Men Who Failed To Spot Trouble Coming

John Hopkins, Golf Correspondent

In establishing “Team Tiger”, Tiger Woods has followed principles taught to him by Earl Woods, his late father, a US Marines officer who fought in Vietnam.

Mr Woods Sr taught him to look after himself and to trust only a few people. Team Tiger consists of Mark Steinberg, his manager, Hank Haney, his swing coach, Steve Williams, his caddie, and Bryon Bell, president of Tiger Woods Design. They have to be discreet about their work with Woods, be loyal to him, do their job well and at all times put Woods’ requirements before their own.

Mr Steinberg, 42, a law graduate of the University of Illinois, has been Woods’ agent for 12 years as well as the agent for Annika Sorenstam, once the world’s No 1 woman golfer. He works for the International Management Group (IMG), the company started by the late Mark McCormack to look after sports stars.

Mr Steinberg keeps a low profile and his instinct is to say “no”. When Florida Police were on their way to interview Woods the day after his accident, it was Mr Steinberg who telephoned to tell them: “Tiger won’t be talking.”

The manager gave a rare interview to a US newspaper in 2002 describing Woods as “one of my best friends”. Mr Steinberg explained that he liked remaining in the shadows because “the stories aren’t about Mark Steinberg, they are about Tiger Woods. People want to talk to Mark Steinberg not because of Mark Steinberg but because of Tiger Woods and I think I have a clear perspective on that”.

“These men HAD to KNOW SOMETHING was going on that was SLEAZY.”

Sure. A lot of people knew. The PGA community is small and tight knit. Along with fellow golfers, I am betting a lot of sports media people knew as well. May have been one of the best kept open secrets in recent history.

....has been Woods’ agent for 12 years as well as the agent for Annika Sorenstam....

Sounds like trouble to me....

Who was the agent that facilitated some of Tigers sleazy escapades?

It’s like the Kennedys. They all had lapdog yes-men who ran interference for them all their lives.

I’d seriously doubt that his agent would facilitate such......Tiger’s been his bread and butter; why jeopardize?

I consider Mark Steinberg a huge part of the problem and not of the solution.

Why there has not been more attention paid or examination given to the role of IMG, Steinberg’s role in this entire affair from the time Tiger decided to ‘fool around’, and the advice that they gave Tiger after the car accident and are still giving Tiger is really beyond belief?

Was IMG giving advice to McCain’s handlers during the 2008 campaign?

Earl Woods was a US Army Infantry Officer with the Special Forces. He was also a Professor of Military Science & Tactics for the Army ROTC at the City College of New York.

No offense to the Marines but, I stopped reading the article after that error.

Steve Williams, his caddie

If he worked for a percentage of the purse, I hope he saved some money because his earnings will be down considerably this year, like down to nothing.
