Billy Joel's daughter overdoses, in hospital
The New York Post ^ | 12-5-09

Billy Joel’s 23-year-old daughter was rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan today after allegedly ingesting a large number of sleeping pills in what police consider a suicide attempt, The Post has learned.

Medics were called to Alexa Ray Joel’s apartment at 19 Bethune St. apartment in the West Village at approximately 12:21 p.m. this afternoon, sources told The Post. The 911 call came from a roommate who reported that Joel had taken too many sleeping pills, sources said.

Joel was conscious at St. Vincent’s Hospital, and is expected to survive. Joel is the only daughter of piano man Billy Joel and his supermodel wife, Christie Brinkley. Brinkley and Joel married in 1984, and divorced in 1994.

A prolific songwriter since her young teens, Alexa Joel is also a talented pianist and singer. She’s among several celebrities scheduled to appear in a tree-lighting ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange this Thursday.

Indeed. Her childhood seemed pretty strange, even by Hollywood standards. Not to mention the incessant, nasty remarks about her adolescent looks. Hope she gets the help she needs.

Hollywood standards? I believe she’s lived in NY all of her life.

She has been a target of all the usual homely comments her entire life, esp. from bloggers and even some snide remarks in the NY Post.

Maybe she pressured him three times.

Only The Good Die Young lyrics

Come out Virginia, don't let me me wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
But sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one
They showed you a statue and told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away
But they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done.....
Only the good die young

You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain't too pretty we ain't too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
But that never hurt no one
Come on Virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal I'll throw you the line
The stained-glass curtain you're hiding behind
Never lets in the sun
And only the good die young

You got a nice white dress and a party on your confirmation
You got a brand new soul
And a cross of gold
But Virginia they didn't give you quite enough information
You didn't count on me
When you were counting on your rosary

They say there's a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it's better but I say it ain't
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
Sinners are much more fun...
And only the good die young

You say your mother told you all that I could give you was a reputation
She never cared for me
But did she ever say a prayer for me?

I post the lyrics for Freepers who are not familiar with the song. Let them make up their own minds.

I believe that if a song were written with similar lyrics about Billy Joel's faith, the song would never be allowed on the radio. An artist who wrote such a song would never be promoted by his record label. Think Frank Zappa's "Jewish Princess".

So that’s why you dislike him. :) As I mentioned earlier, that song is from the point of view of a lustful teenager. The song was actually a flop till some radio stations started banning it and worked up interest. It’s hilarious that something that innocuous offends you. Billy Joel’s faith is Atheist.

One of the many reasons I dislike him. His defense is of the lyrics is weak. Your parroting his defense is doubly so. I think reasonable people will see that he's a bigot.

Maybe the controversy the lyrics stirred up is one of the reasons you like him? Maybe you're just like him, a bigot but when confronted unwilling to admit it and coyly denying the obvious? I didn't hear you condemn the slanders his lyrics contain.

As a Christian, I don’t find that song “innocuous”.

Nonsense. I’ve known plenty of Catholics who love that song. As I said earlier, he writes from the point of view of various characters. Do you think he was an unemployed steel worker as well? And there is plenty of much more acerbic humor about Jews in various films.

“Wow, Alexa’s 23 already? I feel old.”

I do too!

The last time I looked, she was an infant...I saw a photo of her and said, “I can’t believe she looks so much like her father instead of her beautiful mom!”

Turned out, she is very pretty!

BTW, do you think Randy Newman wanted short people to die and approved of the Slave Trade as a couple of his songs seem to suggest?

You are being coy. He is a bigot and you are too. I'm sure some of your best friends are Catholics.

Somehow I don't think that if he ever wrote a song that was offensive to Jews or degrading to Judaism that you would be here defending him.

PS Billy Joel is a hack musician who gained fame way beyond his talent. La-la-diddy-da-da.

I like Woody Allen who makes plenty of films that could be called degrading to Jews. Anyway you’ve veered into a completely different subject matter. To answer your earlier question, I was a toddler when the song was released. In any case, I couldn’t care less about any song lyrics.

Being crabby makes one “despicable”?

Brinkley is or was a top fashion model. She dumped Joel to marry another guy (husband #2 of 3 so far), and had a son by him.

She then went on to say in a published interview, and I paraphrase closely because I read the article some years ago: I had to marry the devil to get this little angel. Nice thing for a mother to say about her child’s father. For publication in a national magazine.

I don’t care how badly a parent feels about an ex-spouse, a decent parent doesn’t talk like that around or about their children. I think it’s despicable.

Then, in divorce #3, her husband cheated on her. Unlike Joel who accepted HER adultery without making it a tabloid event, she did exactly that to #2. Dragged out all of his dirty laundry very publicly. Didn’t seem to matter if or how it might affect the children. It was all about Christie’s feelings being hurt.

I don’t know if she is or is not crabby, or where that came from. She always puts on that million dollar supermodel smile, which one might assume is a continuation of her runway training. Her behavior has been far from maternal, to put it mildly.
