Pitbull rips off three-year-old boy's scalp

13:00 AEST Sat Dec 5 2009

By ninemsn staff

A three-year-old boy has had most of his scalp torn off in a pitbull attack in the Northern Territory.

The boy, whose name has not been released, was playing in the backyard of a relative's house in Katherine when a pitbull latched onto his hair and ripped off a large section of his scalp, the NT news reports.

The boy's mother, who was inside the house at the time of the mauling, ran outside when she heard his screams.

Paramedics rushed the boy to Katherine Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

A large part of the boy's scalp, measuring 10cm by 7cm was left exposed after the attack.

Do you have any hobbies beyond hating a single breed of dog?

At least once a month there is some story where a pit bull attacks a human. This child got off easy only getting his scalp ripped off. Most mailings of toddlers by these useless animals end much more tragically.

The owner usually says something along the lines of “this is so out of character for my Sammy”. Ya sure. Pit bulls should be put down and any parent who leaves their child alone w/one should go to jail for child endangerment. There are many many cases of pit bulls who are gentle their whole lives, trained and have been w/families for years and then one day something sets them off, like a 2 year old running across the room with a ball, and poof someone is dead. You never hear of other breeds doing this, just PIT BULLS. It is in their DNA. They need to be mixed or whatever to make them more docile. I am fine w/letting the whole breed just go extinct.

Very glad to hear that this toddler is ok, aside from the ripped off scalp.

The one thing you said with which I agree is the issue of individual responsibility. That is always the issue - ALWAYS. As for it being in a particular breed’s DNA to be vicious - sorry, it’s not. Granted because of their biological make-up some breeds can do more damage than others when they bite, and some breeds are naturally protective - but that doesn’t mean the breed needs to be “put down” or “allowed to go extinct”. Good grief!!

If its not bred into the breed, why do retrievers retrieve, pointers point and herding dogs herd...Its bred into them for generations. Like viciousness is bred into pits, that is what they were bred for, bull baiting and fighting. It could be bred out of them by care full breeding, but it takes decades for it to be done...

Thoroughbreds run, draft horse's love to pull. I had a husky that took to pulling like a duck takes to water...

Not everyone turns a blind eye to vicious breeds.

Those that call chet a hater because he is the messenger are not the sharpest knife in the drawer..

Firstly, your premise that a natural tendency such as retrieving or pointing is the equivalent of a dog being “vicious” is fallacious. Please cite research to back up your claims. It’s those who believe all of the breed-hating rhetoric that need to take a closer look at what behaviorists (trained dog behaviorists) who work with these animals say about them. Viciousness is NOT a breed-specific trait and no responsible breeder or behaviorist will tell you so. That’s simply nonsense. Have you known any gentle pitbulls, dobes, or rotties? I certainly have - and guess what!! They lived peacefully their entire lives with their owners and never bit anyone. Yes, it’s possible - but you won’t hear THOSE tales in the media, even if they are in the majority. Dobes used to be the favorite whipping post. Then rotties. Now it’s pitbulls. What changed?? Media coverage and scare tactics. Sorry, but humans bear the responsibility for the attacks. Where were the owners? The child’s parents? Was the victim provoking the animal? Somehow, these tales always leave a LOT out of them...Ever wonder why? I don’t. They are deliberately written to evoke a biased response - and sadly, they succeed all too often. Anyone who leaves a powerful dog in the company of an unattended child is asking for trouble - but that’s not a problem specific to a breed: that’s ANY dog. Dogs bite and yes, biologically, some have stronger jaws than others. Malamutes are huge and many are not placed in families with small children. Why? Not because they are vicious, but because they are powerful dogs. The same can be said for many breeds (and by the way, a spitz or poodle can deliver a mean bite as well.) The idea that those who are against breed-bias are turning a “blind eye” is based on a fictional premise. By the way, I did not call anyone a hater, but you will notice I’m also not insulting anyone’s intelligence as you have. Please refrain from ad hominem attacks. Those are best left to the political left who cannot argue any point rationally.

Your rudeness is beyond the pale. It’s not a “lecture”, but since you’re not interested in intelligent conversation - I suppose it was a waste. Only those who wish to remain uninformed would react as you have. Please don’t bother responding unless you can do so respectfully.

It’s not the dogs. It’s the dog owners.

It’s the owners of these dogs that should have them put down. Let it be at their expense.

There is NO good reason to have, raise, breed or keep Pit bulls.

Some things just need killing.. Like a cottonmouth water moccasin. Totally useless.

And your basis for saying pit bulls are the equivalent of water moccasins? I agree it’s not the dogs, and you are right it IS the owners. Historically what is now considered to form the breed of “pit bull” used to be left with children on a regular basis. They are naturally gentle animals - and want to please their humans. That last trait is what gets them in trouble since so many low-life types want them for the worst possible reasons. There is NO good SCIENTIFIC reason for claiming a specific breed of dog is “totally useless”. That is a strictly emotional response built on media hype - but not scientific evidence.

I said it’s the owners....that should pay for having them put down.

Tell me what would be the loss if all pitbulls were killed tonight?

No loss at all.

We’re doing pretty well without the dinosaurs.
Some things just need killing.

Again, where is your scientific evidence that pit bulls are “useless”? I’m betting it’s based on the numerous fear-mongering sensational media hype. I realize you said “it’s the owners....that should pay for having them put down.” However, be careful going down that road. It could be a type of dog you love next. After all, it used to be dobes, rotties, chows, and other breeds getting the bad rap now given to pit bulls. (And by the way, the “pit bull” is really a type of dog - not a breed per se.)

Wen they start killing kids, they need killing.
If a chihuahua kills a kid, kill ‘em all.

If ALL dogs have to go in order to make it ‘fair’. then kill ‘em all.

I do. I have several. And, I would have them all put down if it meant saving one child.

Wouldn’t you?

“And, I would have them all put down if it meant saving one child.”

Your statement is not indicative of any reality. Why would it ever be necessary to put down all of your pets? And how could doing so ever “save” any child?? (Unless you could somehow read the animals’ minds and know that they were going to attack and kill the child??) Good Grief! You really have been drinking deeply of the media “breed-hating kill them all” hype, haven’t you? You are basing your response to an entire type of dog on the actions of those few reported in the media. What about the stories where pits have saved lives?? Oh, that’s right. The objective media doesn’t report those. Never mind.

“Historically what is now considered to form the breed of “pit bull” used to be left with children on a regular basis. They are naturally gentle animals - and want to please their humans...”

You forgot the rest of the sentence which is....

...except when a toddler runs toward them playing w/a ball. Then, instead of wanting to please their humans, they want to RIP THEIR HUMAN’S SCALP OFF.

The only thing (aside from declaring the breed a menace to society, and put down which would be fine with me) is that people should be required to get licenses for them, just as they do w/handguns. And also prohibit these dogs from being in any household w/kids under 16.

The parents should definitely be locked up for child endangerment in this case and forbidden from owning pit bulls. Frankly anyone without enough brain cells to know that you don’t leave a c toddler alone w/a pit bull, should not be having any more children either. Total nitwits.
