Welcome to the Free Republic Nascar Off Season Thread #6 (We've had more off season threads than JJ has wins but one less than Jr's MPD wins :)

Fire up those engines boys and let's go to the awards show

2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champions Week Preview

* Wednesday [Dec 2nd] – The champion’s Las Vegas celebration begins at 10:00am/pt with the Chasers for Charity Fanfest at Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s Neon Garage. The free-admission portion of the event includes a red-carpet walk by the champion and other 2009 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers, car displays, live music, reduced-price concessions and a raffle drawing. A Charity Roast of Johnson will be held at 1:30pm/pt in the speedway’s Blackjack Club and is open to the first 300 people who respond (information at www.lvms.com). A $250 tax-deductible donation to Speedway Children’s Charities includes a private reception with Johnson and Chase participants plus reserved seats and parking. The event will be shown on closed-circuit television in the Neon Garage.

* Thursday [Dec 3rd] – The annual NASCAR NMPA Myers Brothers Awards event will be held from 1:00-2:45pm/pt in the Venetian Showroom at The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino. Johnson will be joined by the rest of the top 12 drivers in the 2009 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, plus Raybestos Rookie of the Year Joey Logano and other annual award winners. (MPD will be awarded as well - guess they forgot)

Race fans will get to see Johnson and fellow Chase drivers participate in a Victory Lap parade in their show cars on Las Vegas Boulevard – the city’s legendary “Strip” – beginning at 3:15pm/pt at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. “Mr. Las Vegas,” Wayne Newton, will drop the green flag to start the event. The lap includes a pit stop and “burnout” at the Spring Mountain Road intersection before returning to the MGM Grand at 4:00pm/pt. SIRIUS NASCAR Radio will carry live coverage of the Victory Lap.

Following the Victory Lap, fans will have the opportunity to have their questions answered by the Chase drivers at the NASCAR After the Lap Presented by Tissot from 4:30-5:30pm/pt (doors open at 3:00pm) at the MGM/Hollywood Theater.

This week, fans will be able to submit their questions via Street Tour, AFLAC Pit Stop and Twitter to their favorite Chase drivers and hear the drivers respond to those questions at this event. SIRIUS NASCAR radio will broadcast the event live and NASCAR.com will be producing a Video on Demand that will be available on its website afterwards.

The Tissot Watch presentation to the top 12 drivers will also take place at this event.

That evening, from 7:00-9:00pm/pt, Johnson and other Chase drivers will join Tony Stewart at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino as he presents the third annual “Stewie Awards,” live on SIRIUS NASCAR Radio. The event, which honors the best, boldest and funniest moments of the 2009 NASCAR season, will take place at the Rio’s Masquerade Village and is open to the public.

* Friday [Dec 4th] – Johnson formally accepts his 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship awards. He, his family and his Hendrick Motorsports team will participate in traditional photos during the afternoon, before attending the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards Ceremony that evening at Wynn’s Las Vegas. SPEED will televise the event live from 6:00 pm -10:00pm/pt (9:00pm - 1:00am/et). SIRIUS NASCAR Radio 128 and MRN Radio will also broadcast the ceremony live nationwide.

That’s why, even with all it’s warts, I like Nascar the best of all sports. ;)

Some pics.......

The stage is in the center....tarp covered. The drivers will enter from the right, on the red carpet, talk briefly with Jamie Little on stage, then exit to the left of the stage, where I was standing for all of the following pics.

I learned two things today - the top dogs are way way cool. All of them took time to sign stuff and talk to the fans. All of them are way small! DJ did his Q&A before the drivers showed up, DJ is 6'4", 2" shorter than me - these guys are all short shits! I knew Mark Martin was small, but damn! The boy said he looks like a kid!

This is a street legal car, head lights are real- no decal. Look at the passenger side - you can see the restraint straps. The tech said it is rated at 850 hp, "like the real one!" These cars will do the "lap on the strip" tomorrow.

My boy. WCG - you see what he is wearing, right?

Jamie Little - that girl knows her stuff on Nascar! and she is from Las Vegas!

My man is in the middle of the pic - can't miss the smile!

Brian Vickers saying Hi to DJ

more to follow.............

Travel “trailer” is winterized and standing by until we join the Good Sam Club Camp at Daytona Beach in Feb. At least we are thinking pretty seriously about pulling it down there. Probably depends on the price of gas for the truck.

As for the trailer park comment, a NASCAR Race ain’t no typical trailer park. ;)

Carl has not changed since the days I was running against him at the local dirt tracks in Central Missouri. There was a time at a little 1/4 mile bullring driving sportsman stock cars. I was leading Carl coming to the Checkered Flag. In the middle of turn 4 my rear end gear broke and I slowed while Carl passed below me and took the Checkers. While being pushed into the pits I saw Carl do his back flip off of the Camaro he was driving. That race could have been my first ever win. For him winning was pretty routine.

He was driving a dirt Late Model and we were competing in the same division a couple years later.
I had a bad night with mechanical problems and retired early from the feature. To complete the bad night after the races I had a brake lock up on my hauler and skidded a tire flat. Sitting along side the road without a spare, Carl stopped to help me out. He obtained a spare tire (a McCreary stock car tire) from the son’s stock car hauler of the guy he was driving for, and they loaned it to me so I could get home (about 40 miles). Brought the spare back to the track the next week.

Just a few weeks after that he was driving a Mittler Brothers Craftsman Truck. I think his cousin Kenny Schrader had a lot to do with that hook up. Carl had certainly made the best of the opportunity. When he signed with Roush, it was the best move he could have ever made. Talk about a lucky break.

I have since retired as a driver. But I look back at several races in different types of cars at different types of tracks, and savor the days I ran against Carl. I was just a little fish in a big sea, having fun.

Thanks so much for all the pics - You caught a really great one of DJ. I’m glad the boy still wears his 88 gear :)

I worked really hard to get him voted MPD #7 if you google Dale Jr MPD my pics and voting request link pops up right on top right under videos. LOL

I guess his height is why they call MM “the kid” lol

*Sigh* I know - no racing except on YouTube and video :(

There is a tire test on 12/15 and the Danica saga will continue up to the ARCA test date to see if she’s gonna do it. She will IMO have to do that before they will let her in a NW car.

Much happening even before the banquet. Thursday, the Chex NMPA Most Popular Driver award will be presented. Dale Earnhardt Jr. has won it six consecutive times. Can he do it again? Among the other awards is the Myers Brothers Award, given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the sport. The finalists include Mark Martin, MRN announcer Barney Hall and the late David Poole, motorsports writer for The Charlotte Observer. I’m lucky enough in my role as President of the National Motorsports Press Association that I’ll get to present this award. Many other awards will be presented Thursday, starting around 4 p.m. Eastern. Follow me on Twitter and I’ll post many of the awards as they are announced.

# The Kansas Speedway Development Corp is part of a group that was selected by the Kansas Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board to develop and operate a Hollywood-themed entertainment destination overlooking turn 2 at Kansas Speedway.

International Speedway Corp., which owns the track, plans to petition NASCAR to move a second date to Kansas Speedway. Originally the plan was to have the second race in 2011. With the construction not being completed until the first quarter of 2012 that might push the request back a year. Either way, expect the Cup series to be racing at Kansas twice a year soon.

The question is where does the date come from? Well, International Speedway Corp. will more than likely have to take a date away from one of its tracks to give Kansas its second date. Among the ISC-owned tracks that have two races a year are: Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., Daytona, Martinsville, Michigan, Phoenix, Richmond, Talladega. ISC-owned tracks with one Cup race are: Chicagoland Speedway, Darlington, Homestead, Kansas, Watkins Glen.

So where does the 2nd Kansas Cup date come from? While there could be some wheeling and dealing going on, among the favorites to lose a date could be Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Martinsville and Phoenix.

Thanks for sharing your ‘Back in the Days’. The little bull rings produce some great entertainment for local race fans. We have a paved 3/8 here in Eureka but then it’s a long haul to the nearest track north, south, east or west. We are blessed with a Drag Strip for local street racers...

This is all the more of a fan tribute given the tribulations that have been upon Jr these last couple of years. Obviously the fans value the MAN for this award notwithstanding the difficulties on the race track.

Way to go Jr!!!!!!! (one exclamation pt for each year won)
