she was chasing him down the street, smashing the windows, or trying to stand in front of him as he drove off, hence the zigging, zagging, and mowing down of fire hydrants and trees.

He got out of the vehicle either pissed or dazed or both. Either the steering wheel knocked the sense out of him or she did with the club -- although being hit with something like that directly in the bean would likely be fatal, imho.
