RARE: San Francisco Trolley Dash Cam Footage - 1905 (Video)
LiveLeak ^ | November 26, 2009 | ghastlyghost

This is a film taken from the dash of a San Francisco Trolley in 1909. The image flips just a few times but 99% of the video is good quality footage. It's interesting to see how the people on the street acted in those days. If there were any traffic or jaywalking laws at the time they clearly weren't enforced. If you can't stand modern drivers then take a look at what your grandparents and great grandparents had to deal with.

Amazing, only three years after the 1906 quake, there did not appear to be much damage.

I remember our preacher many years ago commenting about the current times and end times. He stated that we have just come out of the Roman era. Take a man from 1880 and put him in the time of Jesus and he would have adjusted. Same with a man from the the time of Jesus put into 1880. Take these same men and put them into 1980 or 2009...Well....no so easy.

The song playing is called “La Femme d’Argent” by a band called Air. I only know it because I had the CD back in my college days.

Trying to visualize why switching to left hand drive " eliminated a whole lot of linkage to the transmission and provided a strong foundation for the emergency brake" and it doesn't make any sense. What difference would it make?
Comment about driving on mountain roads doesn't make sense either, sometimes the cliff side is on your right, sometimes it is on your left.

On the same road and same mountain too depending on if you’re going up or down!

Stoners must have written that Wikipedia entry.

Perhaps you can help me with a question that has been perplexing me now for over 10 years since I first visited the world-class automobile Museum here in Amerang Germany. The museum has hundreds of German automobiles and even wooden motorcycles dating back to the Benz days. One can trace the evolution of the German automobile and the evolution of the German manufacturers step-by-step from about 1885 to the modern era.

I was interested to observe that the steering wheels of all the automobiles prior to 1928 were on the right side and the steering wheel on every automobile after that time was placed on the left side. It was as if someone had passed a law. I inquired of the staff and they had no idea what I was talking. Subsequent cursory research into the Internet has also been unavailing. Do you have an insight into the obvious question, why?

WOW. One of the most facinating videos I’ve ever seen. Cool.

Back in time, in SanFrancisco, when men were men... well.

I am struck by the lack of ladies. I watched more than half of it and all I saw were males. Interesting.

“Amazing, only three years after the 1906 quake, there did not appear to be much damage.”

I noticed that too.

I am betting this may be of a later date. The cars look too advanced for 1909 but I am not a vintage car buff so I donno.

Either way, it’s fascinating. But wimp.com has it attributed as 1905:

Yeah, I see now that the one on YouTube says 1905 as well. It might be 1905.

I was talking to my wife about that exact fact. Three years on from the quake and Market St. looks grand. Big, wide and full of large buildings. Heading North towards Embarcadero - which looks to be in very good condition - see the clock tower.
