She was all nervous an had a chart that didn’t agree with the chart they published. They were freaking out that it was going to be questioned by congress and they would demand the data.

The main area of Gabi Hegerl’s research is the natural variability of climate and changes in climate due to natural and anthropogenic changes in radiative forcing (such as greenhouse warming, climate effects of volcanic eruptions and changes in solar radiation). Studying global scale surface temperature observations and reconstructions over the past few hundred years shows that the 20th century temperature evolution is highly unusual relative to estimates of climate variability, and that greenhouse gas forcing is likely responsible for a large fraction of the 20th century warming. These changes also suggest that climate reacts in a substantial way to external forcing, and provide estimates for climate sensitivity. For society, changes in more regional aspects of climate and changes in climatic extremes and rainfall have potentially a stronger impact. Gabi is therefore also studying changes in climate extremes in climate model simulations and tries to detect them in observations.

Gabi was strongly involved in the preparation of the recently released Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report (Coordinating lead author of a chapter on understanding and attributing climate change, and a member of the writing team for the summary for policymakers) and serves on various other committees.

No worries, I can wait till next week! It would be great to hear from you next week particularly if you feel I have overlooked something, I am planning to submit a little GRL paper on the detection results based on paleodata soon, and so a warning if I am doing something wrong would be great. Its not surprising that the detection results are stable, since other than volcanic forcing is mainly driven by the low-f component anyway. But it looks to me like the volcanic response is not smaller or even a bit larger in the annual JGR data (except for one real real big peak in the 1998 data).
