A has-been writer, Phil Martin, with a severe case of writer's block, discovers a lost manuscript by Edgar Allan Poe and creates a new form of mystery novel. Phil's girlfriend is Ann Fleming, whose brother is "Kid Gloves" Fleming, a jailbird. Phil visits London where he tours the bomb damaged house where Edgar Allan Poe had resided and finds an unreleased short story manuscript by the master of mystery and horror. With a little rewrite, Phil becomes the next master of doom. After Phil wins an "Edgar Award" a Dr. Selgrove, a Poe researcher, phones Phil and says that he knows of the manuscript that Phil got from Mrs. Carruthers. Phil cuts off his relationship with Ann. Selgrove wants the manuscript as payment for his silence, but Phil had already destroyed it. Phil kills Selgrove and goes about establishing his alibi. He visits his old pal, Lieutenant John Kirkland. He learns that "Kid Gloves" has escaped prison but then was shot dead by the police. Kirkland gets a call, Ann is dead, by the hand of her brother, and she had been his time alibi for the Selgrove murder. Phil is arrested and convicted of the murder of Ann Fleming.
